---- — HAVERHILL — It’s going to be a busy off-season at several city schools.
The high school weight room is set to be transformed into a modern fitness center and three middle schools are to receive security upgrades, among other work planned this summer.
Superintendent James Scully said the new security systems, featuring door buzzers and video monitors, will be installed at Whittier, Nettle and Consentino middle schools. The cameras will be tied into a centralized system designed to permanently capture the images of anyone entering the buildings, he said.
All schools in the district, including the middle schools, already have “controlled access,” but much of the existing technology is old and outdated, Scully said.
While school security has been a top concern since the Dec. 14 elementary school massacre in Newton, Conn., Scully said the district began planning the upgrades well before that incident.
From new exercise bikes and treadmills to free weights and other muscle-building equipment, Haverhill High School’s weight-training room is about to converted into a modern fitness center, the superintendent said. The weight-training room, located in the Charles C. White Pool building on the high school campus, sustained damage due to a leaky roof. The project also includes cleaning the pool and fixing lights and tiles in the pool building, Scully said.
Local businessman Ernie DiBurro is covering the cost of the new fitness equipment, which is expected to cost between $70,000 and $90,000.
Money for the other summer maintenance jobs has already been set aside in the school budget, Scully said.

Consentino School: Electrical system overhaul to allow computers, air cleaners and air-conditioners to work better.
Crowell Elementary: Heating system being converted from oil to natural gas.
Tilton Elementary: Repair stairwell and interior damage caused by leaking roof before it was replaced a year ago.
Whittier Middle: Upgrade electrical systems, handicapped access improvements.
Maintenance facility annex, 60 Brown Street: Cleaned and set up to serve as main office for maintenance workers.
