Because of the threat posed by Hurricane Earl, The Haverhill Gazette has canceled its debate with the Republican candidates for the 5th congressional district, which was scheduled for Friday, Sept. 3, at 6:30 p.m.
Gov. Deval Patrick this afternoon declared a state of emergency for Friday in anticipation of the storm's arrival. Winds of between 30 and 70 miles per hour are possible, and the newspaper's management chose not to ask the candidates or the public to risk traveling in potentially dangerous conditions.
The debate will not be rescheduled.
