The Massachusetts Animal Coalition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to decreasing the number of abused, neglected and homeless animals throughout Massachusetts, has awarded $7,500 to Animal Rescue Merrimack Valley.
The money was raised through MAC's "I'm Animal Friendly" license plate campaign, an effort through the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles to raise awareness for spaying and neutering animals.
Animal Rescue Merrimack Valley's mission is to continue its "No Excuse Monday Clinic" program, an affordable spay/neuter clinic for low-income individuals or families with pets throughout the Valley.
ARMV is based in Bradford and also helps to shelter and foster homeless cats and kittens and to help them find homes.
"The Massachusetts Animal Coalition is pleased to award grant money to ... animal organizations located throughout the state," said Kara Holmquist, MAC board member. "There are so many organizations in Massachusetts working toward the common goal of reducing the number of homeless animals in the state, and the grant money will give these folks more resources to help accomplish this important goal."
More than 7,000 plates have been sold since the program's inception six years ago, and as of July 2009, more than $650,000 has been donated and 13,000 animals have been treated.
The plates can be purchased at mass.gov/rmv.
