ABCs of academic success
Pentucket Workshop Preschool, a nonprofit organization, will host an encore presentation of "The ABC's of Academic Success" on Thursday, Oct. 22 fro 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at 22 Pleasant St., Georgetown. Parent Academy
The District Parent Council's Parent Academy will kickoff its fourth year on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Nettle Middle School, 150 Boardman St. All sessions are free and open to all parents, guardians and community members. Babysitting and pizza are provided for children 12 and under. Registration is at 5:45 p.m., program begins at 6 p.m. First three sessions: "School Funding: Where does it come from and where does it go?" on Oct. 27, hosted by Nettle Middle School; "Homework Help" on Dec. 2, hosted by Pentucket Lake; "Enrichment Activities" on Jan. 27, hosted by Bradford Elementary School.
The District Parent Council will meet with the Superintendent of Schools the first Wednesday of every month to discuss issues related to education. Meetings are at the School Department's Central Office in City Hall, Room 104, from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m.

Polar Express
St. Michael School presents the Polar Express on Saturday, Dec. 19. Train departs from the Newburyport MBTA Station. Ride times are 11:35 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 per person and go on sale Saturday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Saint Michael School Main Street Atrium. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence. Donations of new hats, mittens, scarves and sweaters for all ages will be accepted at the train station and distributed by Cor Unum and the Department of Children and Families to those in need. Sacred Hearts plans fall festival
Sacred Hearts School in Bradford annual Fall Festival & Craft Fair will take place Friday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event features children's activities, a friday night BBQ, valuable themed raffle baskets, local crafters and merchants, jewelry, gently used books and CDs, wheel of chance, cookie walk, cider, doughnuts and popcorn.
Crafter applications are available.

Author speaks at NECC about evil in youth literature
Young adult novelist Francisco X. Stork will lecture on "Evil in Young Adult Literature," Oct. 15 at 12:30 p.m. at Northern Essex Community College's Louise Haffner Fournier Education Center, 78-82 Amesbury St., Lawrence.
This free presentation, open to the public, is part of the White Fund Lecture Series.
Stork will explore the presence and treatment of crime and evil in current young adult literature as well as in his own work.

Bullying presentation at Consentino Middle School
Haverhill police Officer Bill Alvarado will present an information session on bullying and harassment for parents of Consentino Middle School students on Tuesday, Oct. 20, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the cafeteria at the school. Consentino School is on Washington Street.
Walnut Square collects items to send to troops in Mideast
Students at Walnut Square School will collect items to send to local troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The servicemen chosen to receive packages from the school all have ties to Walnut Square.
Junior Honor Society plans dance, food drive
The Junior Honor Society at JG Whittier Middle School is planning a canned food drive to support local food pantries during the holidays.
Contributions will be collected between Oct. 20 and Nov. 6.
The society's annual Halloween dance is Friday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. All grades can participate.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, Oct. 20. Tickets are $5 in advance; $6 at the door.
Silver Hill Fall Festival includes walk, craft fair
A Fall Festival featuring a walk-a-thon and craft fair will be Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gymnasium at Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School. Last year's walk-a-thon raised money for a new playscape that is being built. The craft fair was added this year to make this event more festive. Tables are available for a $25 fee. Whittier PTO to serve free dinner on Oct. 21
The J.G. Whittier School PTO will host its annual pasta dinner at on Wednesday, Oct. 21, beginning at 5:30 p.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m. This is a fee event for any member of the school's community. Dinner will be served in the school cafeteria. JG Whittier School is at 256 Concord St.
Consentino PTO to meet
The Parent Teacher Organization at Consentino School will meet on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the school library. Consentino School is on Washington Street.
Schools provide screening
Haverhill public schools provide free preschool screening to 3- and 4-year-old children in Haverhill. Preschool screening is a brief look at a child's overall development, including the areas of language, motor skills, and thinking and reasoning skills. Screening is a brief, child-friendly, play-oriented time during which a trained preschool teacher will work with the child. The information gained from preschool screening may help answer some parents' questions and help make decisions about good learning experiences for your child. Beginner Internet classes offered at library
The Haverhill Public Library is offering beginner Internet classes with individual attention and hands-on practice.
You do not have to own a computer to participate but you are welcome to come with your own wireless enabled laptop.
