UNH Manchester invites students to visit

UNH Manchester will host an open house for high school juniors, seniors and their families on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 6:15 p.m. in the third floor auditorium at 400 Commercial St., Manchester, N.H.

Guests will be able to tour the campus, meet professors, talk with students, and learn about the UNH Manchester experience from alumni and staff. The program will provide prospective students and families with the opportunity to learn about the college's academic programs, student life, explore internships and career services and learn more about the campus resources available at UNH Manchester.

NECC fair: 'Women Returning to School'

Northern Essex Community College will host a free Women Returning to School Information Fair on Monday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m. in the Technology Center of the Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St.

This event is designed to help ease common anxieties and apprehensions about returning to school after being away from the classroom for some time. Participants will also learn how to enroll, apply for financial aid and access support services.

Parent Academy sessions scheduled

The District Parent Council's Parent Academy will host free sessions open to all parents, guardians and community members. Babysitting and pizza are provided for children 12 and under.

Registration is at 5:45 p.m., program begins at 6 p.m. Sessions are "Homework Help" on Dec. 2, hosted by Pentucket Lake; "Enrichment Activities" on Jan. 27, hosted by Bradford Elementary School.

The District Parent Council will meet with the Superintendent of Schools the first Wednesday of every month to discuss issues related to education.

Regular aren't council meetings are at the School Department's Central Office in City Hall, Room 104, from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m.

Polar Express books holiday trips

St. Michael School in North Andover presents the Polar Express on Saturday, Dec. 19.

The train departs from the Newburyport MBTA Station. Ride times are 11:35 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 3:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Tickets are $20 per person.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence.

Donations of new hats, mittens, scarves and sweaters for all ages will be accepted at the train station and distributed by Cor Unum and the Department of Children and Families to those in need.

Junior Honor Society plans food drive

The Junior Honor Society at JG Whittier Middle School is planning a canned food drive to support local food pantries during the holidays.

Contributions will be collected through Nov. 6.

NECC provides speakers to nonprofits

Nonprofit organizations, such as schools, community service clubs, and libraries, are invited to visit the Northern Essex Community College Speakers Bureau website where they can book speakers free of charge on over 70 different topics, ranging from "Why Vampires are Sexy" to "Did You Sleep Well Last Night."

Some of the general areas of interest include business and the workplace, communications, deaf culture, education, human services, health, science and travel, social Issues, technology, theatre, music, art, and literature.

The speakers are available through the NECC Marketing Communications department. Each speaker's availability depends upon his or her personal and professional schedules. Presentations vary in length, but most are approximately 30 minutes long followed by a brief question and answer period.

Walnut Square collects items to send to troops

Students at Walnut Square School will collect items to send to local troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The servicemen chosen to receive packages from the school all have ties to Walnut Square.

School screenings

Haverhill schools provide free preschool screening to 3- and 4-year-old children in Haverhill. This brief look at a child's overall development includes the areas of language, motor skills, and thinking and reasoning skills. Screening is a brief, child-friendly, play-oriented time during which a trained preschool teacher will work with the child. The information gained from preschool screening may help answer some parents' questions and help make decisions about good learning experiences for your child. Beginner Internet classes offered at library

The Haverhill Public Library is offering beginner Internet classes with individual attention and hands-on practice.

You do not have to own a computer to participate but you are welcome to come with your own wireless enabled laptop.
