Golf team starts season strong

The Haverhill High golf team is off to an impressive start to the 2012 season. The Hillies picked up a pair of huge wins over perennial league powers Billerica and Central Catholic to improve to 3-0-1 on the season. They will play at their home course, Bradford Country Club, for their next four matches, including a big matchup with Andover on Friday.

The football team was edged in the home opener by Tewksbury on Friday night. With the scored tied at 22, Tewksbury scored with one minute and 30 seconds remaining for the MVC victory. It was a great high school football atmosphere for the home opener, as Trinity Stadium was packed with the largest crowd for a Haverhill game since 2006. The Hillies are on the road for the next two games before returning home on Oct. 5 to face Chelmsford.

The girls volleyball team won its first two matches of the year. After a comeback win at Dracut, the Hillies pounded Billerica at home 3-0 on Wednesday night. The next home match for the Hillies will be on Sept. 24 when they host North Andover at 6 p.m.

The cross country teams split in their home opener last Wednesday against Tewksbury. The girls came away with a convincing 17-43 win while the boys dropped a 45-18 decision to the Redmen. Both teams were in action against Dracut on Wednesday before travelling to the Amherst Invitational in Holyoke on Saturday.

The girls swim team fell to Andover on the road last week before downing Notre Dame at home on Friday. The Hillies will welcome North Andover to the league on Friday, hosting the Scarlet Knights at the Charles C. White Pool at 3:30 p.m.

The soccer teams play important MVC matches this week when they take on Chelmsford and Tewksbury. The boys team is at home against Chelmsford on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Stadium. The girls team hosts Tewksbury on Thursday afternoon. The girls are 1-2-1 while the boys are 1-4.

The field hockey team will be looking for its second win of the year this week. The Hillies host Dracut Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Natick on Saturday at noon. Both games are slated for Trinity Stadium.
