When driving through Ayer's Village last week, the Lamplighter as slowed by, of course, a horse. A local family was escorting a horse along Route 97, and fortunately the horse remained well behaved despite noisy traffic around it.
The Lamplighter noticed businesses still aren't making use of the city-supplied planters along Washington and Wingate streets. Hopefully shops will begin using them soon before they're overflowing with trash.
The New England Horror Writers' anthology "Epitaphs" — featuring local authors and editors from Haverhill — is a finalist in the international Bram Stoker Awards competition for Superior Achievement in An Anthology. In addition, contributor Chris Golden is a finalist for Superior Achievement In A Graphic Novel. Winners will be announced on March 31 at the World Horror Convention in Salt Lake City.
Elaine Barker, owner of the Paper Potpourri company, will serve as a judge for the 24th annual LOUIE Awards — the premier awards ceremony of the Greeting Card Association honoring excellence in the card industry. This is the third year Barker has taken part as a judge and will also be a presenter. The awards will take place in New York City on May 20.
There's a big week ahead for both Whittier Regional High basketball teams as they will be playing in the state vocational school tournament. The Whittier boys host Greater New Bedford Thursday at 5 p.m. and the Whittier girls host Shawsheen immediately after. The finals of the tournament will be on Friday night.
