---- — The Hillie girls tennis squad is off to a good start, going 4-1 over its first five matches. The Hillies downed Lawrence and Amesbury last week and dropped a 3-2 decision to Chelmsford. They will host Andover on April 24 and Billerica on April 26. The boys team will have a busy week next week with matches vs. Lawrence on April 22, at Billerica on April 24 and vs. Andover on April 26.
Boy, girl runners finish strong at Ottaviani Invitational
The Haverhill track program hosted the 36th annual John Ottaviani Invitational on Saturday. For the second straight year, this was a co-ed event, with a total of 43 teams from Massachusetts and New Hampshire participating. Reading took the boys team title, edging Central Catholic, while Andover took the girls title. The Haverhill girls team placed 10th and the boys team was 12th in the event. Alex Mahew won the 100-meter dash in convincing fashion with a time of 11.20. Riley Gilmore was the top finisher on the girls side, placing second in the 2-mile run.
Boys volleyball team takes three in a row
After opening the season with a loss, the Haverhill boys volleyball team reeled off three straight wins. The Hillies defeated Greater Lowell, Billerica and Lowell, winning nine of the 10 games played in those matches. Haverhill will host perennial state power Milford on Friday at 11:30 a.m.
Baseball team takes a win
The baseball team got in the win column last Tuesday, hanging on for a 4-3 victory over Triton. The Hillies will host Andover on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Stadium. The softball team will host Dracut at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Riverside Park and will be home again on Monday to take on Tewksbury.
Boys and girls lacrosse teams bag wins
The girls lacrosse team moved back above the .500 mark with a 15-10 win over Shawsheen on Saturday. The Hillies are 3-2 heading into Monday’s home game against Greater Lowell Tech. The boys lacrosse team snagged its first win, also defeating Shawsheen on Saturday. The Hillies will travel to Lowell on Friday then will be off until hosting Dracut on April 26.

College Athletics Night moved to May 14
Haverhill High School will host College Athletics Night – “Everything You Need to Know to Compete at the Next Level” on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The event was originally scheduled for April 23. A panel of coaches representing all NCAA levels will be on hand to discuss various aspects of competing in in sports at the college level. The event is free and open to the public. Items that will be reviewed include the recruiting process, NCAA clearinghouse and eligibility, scholarships and financial aid, the college playing experience and more.
