Free Community Skate to benefit Somebody Cares New England

The Ice Skating Academy will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a free community skate at the Haverhill Veterans Rink.

Members of the Academy will be collecting food pantry items for Somebody Cares New England in Haverhill. Donations are not required but appreciated.

When: Monday, Jan. 20, Martin Luther King Day.

Time: The skate is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes skate rentals, treats and music by a DJ.

Where: Veterans Memorial Skating Rink, located behind Haverhill High School, 137 Monument St.

Admission: Free, but donations of food pantry items for Somebody Cares are appreciated.

New exercise program for seniors: The Council on Aging is starting a new exercise program titled “3B Senior Fitness: Balance, Bones and Brain.” The class will begin on Friday, Jan. 17 and runs from 11 a.m. to noon. The first class is being offered free of charge. Classes will be held at the Citizens Center, 10 Welcome St. This is a comprehensive program of fitness appropriate for seniors and includes balance training to prevent falls, strength training to increase bone density and age appropriate trivia to challenge the brain. By incorporating trivia questions along with the workout, you will enjoy the workout, laugh, and not only challenge your body but your brain too. Haverhill Senior Baseball registration: Haverhill Senior Baseball is now accepting applications for the 2014 season. Sign-ups will be held at the public library on Jan. 25 and March 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Applications are also available online at haverhillseniorbaseball.com and can be mailed to PO Box 5202, Bradford, MA 01835.
