Girls basketball instruction and travel team tryouts planned

Several events are coming up for local girls interested in playing youth basketball.

There will be tryouts for the seventh and eighth grade travel team Saturday, Oct. 27, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Pentucket Lake School, Concord Street. Tryouts for the fifth and sixth grade travel team will be Nov. 3 from noon to 2 p.m. at Pentucket Lake School.

The city’s Recreation Department is also running instructional basketball sessions for girls, Saturday mornings from Nov. 3 to Jan. 26. The session for girls in grades three and four is from 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. The session for grades five and and six is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The session for grades seven and eight are from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

The program is run by Haverhill High girls basketball coach Bob Melillo. Instructors are Shawna Murphy Mottram, Beth Pickles Eddy, Michelle Boudreau Joubert, Alicia Murray and the Varsity Girl’s Basketball Team. Registration is online at the Recreation Department.

The cost is $45 for 10 sessions. Scholarships are available. Questions can be directed to Vinny Ouellette at 978-374-2388, ext. 28, or Bob Melillo at 617-872-7777.
