Talk on safety concerns for elders: Michael Springman, protective services supervisor for Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, will lead an informational presentation on the role of protective services in your community and what steps to take if you have concerns about someone you know.

Library forming new book club: The public library will host the inaugural meeting of its new book club, Get Lit, on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.

Black Cat Benefit Bash planned: Animal Rescue Merrimack Valley (ARMV) will hold its annual Black Cat Benefit Bash on Oct. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the historic Nevins Memorial Library, 305 Broadway, Methuen.

This silent auction/fundraiser benefits the area’s homeless animals and will feature psychic readings, entertainment, food prepared by local chefs, a silent auction and raffles. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Proceeds help ARMV purchase food, provide medical care and fund sterilization clinics for the many feral, stray, and foster cats in its care.

ARMV donation boxes are located at the Market Basket in RiversEdge and Westgate plazas in Haverhill, at Market Basket and Shaw’s in Plaistow, N.H., at Market Basket in North Andover and Lawrence and at Stop & Shop in Methuen. Donations can also be dropped off at pet adoption events being held weekly at the Petco store in Plaistow.
