Watch for an announcement on Friday about the arrival of a major company's manufacturing and research and development operations moving to Haverhill. Until the announcement is official, the name of the company is a secret. Check the online edition of The Haverhill Gazette on Friday and next week's print edition for more information.

One way to tell that it's almost spring? The American Cancer Society has begun its Daffodil Days campaign. For a donation of $10, you can receive a bouquet of freshly cut daffodils. You can also send flowers anonymously to cancer patients in the community by donating a Gift of Hope, a bouquet of 10 daffodils in a vase, for $25. Potted plants are available for $15 and a bear can be delivered anonymously to a child impacted by cancer for a $25 donation. Call 800-227-2345 or order online at cancer.org/daffodils. Advance orders are due by March 5; delivery coincides with the start of spring, the week of March 22.

Another sure sign of spring: Bridal shops have switched the stock in their display windows from white wedding gowns to festivly colored prom dresses fit for princesses.

In this year of unending political campaigns, state Sen. Steven Baddour is about to hop back on the trail. Aides for Haverhill's state senator were outside grocery stores this week collecting signatures for nomination papers for his re-election to the state Senate.

Speaking of Sen. Baddour, it may have taken several months, but he got his revenge against Doug Goudie, better known as TV news personality VB, by applying a cream pie to the face of the Fox 25 morning news guy. Last July, Goudie slapped a cream pie in Baddour's face when his station's morning show visited Methuen, the senator's hometown. Last week, Baddour returned the favor during a charity dodgeball tournament in Lawrence.

There may be a shortage of jobs in many sectors, but not in the pet service business, it seems. The Lamplighter noticed two vans — parked just feet from each other — printed on their sides with doggie day care and other pet services for busy owners.

You may know Don Cannon from Andino's Pizzas and Subs on Washington Street, or during past summers from his post at the hot dog stand in Washington Square. You may not have known that Cannon, 70, a veteran of the Army, suffered from cataracts that left his vision very poor. However, Cannon recently had surgery at the VA Hospital in Jamaica Plain and is happy to report that his vision is now 20/20.

Three Nettle Middle School students were selected to participate in the Northeast Massachusetts District Junior Music Festival. After auditions of over 900 students from more than 90 schools held on Saturday, Jan. 30, 450 students from grades six through ninewere selected to perform in this prestigious Massachusetts Music Educators Association event to take place at Lowell High School on Saturday, March 27. Representing the Nettle School in the concert will be eighth-graders Stacey Filiogianis and Erin Lannan, and seventh-grader Michael Roffo.

Dan Speers, Haverhill's "Citizen Poet," was the recipient of some good timing last week when golfer Tiger Woods held a news conference to issue his mea culpa. Speers is the author of "Tiger Woods: Ten Ways to Play the Lie," a satirical look at golf, swinging (ahem) and ... well, lying. Here's a sample from the section of the book's "Tiger Woods Dictionary: Preferred Lie: 1. An implication that a player may have moved his ball to improve his lie. 2.
