The Merrimack Valley Planning Commission was awarded a $15,700 grant from the Department of Conservation and Recreation for the Merrimack River Trial Development Project, according to Rep. Brian Dempsey.
The project will focus on developing a 30-mile bike and pedestrian trail along the Merrimack River, and will look to local officials, trail advocates and other community leaders in 15 Merrimack Valley areas for support and guidance.
Haverhill's rail trail will be a part of the extended trail, said Dennis Dizoglio, director of the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission. The grant will help the community leaders and trail advocates in mapping out a potentially longer trail within the Valley.
"This funding will assist in the development of a bike and pedestrian trail along the Merrimack River that all citizens of Haverhill, especially families, will greatly benefit from in the future," Dempsey said.
The money was awarded under the Recreational Trails Grant Program.
