With a name like “Off the Wall,” an art show planned for January is designed to draw the attention of local artists interested in showing off their creativity.
That’s what members of the Haverhill Cultural Council are counting on, as they put out a call for non-traditional and three-dimensional artwork to be displayed during the council’s “Freak Out” fundraiser.
The event will be Jan. 26 at the Chit Chat Lounge on downtown Washington Street.
Cultural Council member Ryan Sawyer, who is organizing the event, said most kinds of art can be submitted to the show, including sculptures and wall art.
But, this is no typical art show. No framed work or traditional two-dimensional work, such as paintings and photographs, will be accepted. Unless, of course, a two-dimensional painting or photograph was framed in something out of the ordinary, such as a melting frame in the style of artist Salvador Dali.
“We’re not looking to display framed art on the wall like you might find in a gallery,” Sawyer said. “We want to make this more funky and fun.”
The size of a piece of art work may affect eligibility because the venue of the exhibit is not very large. Much of the art on display will be from local artists.
To entice artists to submit works, the event has no entry fee, although artists are limited to three entries. Art work will be judged by established artists and members of the Haverhill Cultural Council, who will select art work for inclusion in the show.
“We don’t have any predetermined notions of what we will receive,” Sawyer said. “We hope to see what the creative people in the community come up with.”
The show will be a one-day event, so artists must arrange to pick up their work the same evening as the event. Pieces can be sold at the event, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Haverhill Cultural Council to help pay for its “Make Some Noise” downtown summer concert series.
“Off the Wall” will be running in conjunction with the “Freak Out” fundraiser. The “Freak Out” will feature music by local musicians on the first floor of the Chit Chat and the art exhibit will be on the second level in the Martini Lounge.
Interested artists are invited to submit photos of their work along with an artist’s statement to the Haverhill Cultural Council at firstname.lastname@example.org. Deadline for submission is Dec. 31. A final decision will made by Jan. 7. Applications can be sent to: Haverhill Cultural Council, 10 Welcome St., Haverhill, MA 01830.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. for the show. The first musical act performs at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and are available online at ticketriver.com/event/5528 or from members of the Haverhill Cultural Council. Performers include Paul Prue, Division Tree (a psychedelic rock band), EJ Ouellette and Crazy Maggie, and one act to be announced.
