Katherine M. Burke, 84

HAVERHILL | Katherine M. (Lally) Burke of Haverhill, formerly of Waltham, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at Penacook Place in Haverhill. She was 84.

Born in Manchester, N.H., a daughter of the late Martin and Catherine (Reynolds) Lally, Katherine worked for many years as a social worker for the Department of Public Welfare in Waltham and in her later years she worked for the same company as a quality control inspector in Boston.

Katherine was a member of the League of Women Voters, a former treasurer for the Waltham College Club, and was a co-owner with her son for the Town House Pub in Lawrence.

Katherine was the wife of the late Edward J. Burke Sr., and sister of the late John Lally, Martin Lally, Ann E. Lally, Dorothy McNulty and Sr. M. Brendan Lally.

Katherine leaves one son, Edward J. Burke Jr. and his long-time companion Nancy Schwartz of Salisbury; one granddaughter, Kathleen Lagrasso of Braintree; and many nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: The funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from The Joyce Funeral Home, 245 Main St. (Rt. 20) Waltham, followed by a funeral Mass in Saint Jude Church, 147 Main St., Waltham at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Waltham. Visiting hours were held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.





Sophie F. Collins, 95

JENSEN BEACH, Fla. | Sophie F. Collins, 95, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007 in Jensen Beach, Fla.

Born Oct. 12, 1912, in Haverhill, she graduated Haverhill High School, Class of 1929.

She was employed as a bookkeeper for Hooker Howe Co. and the Bradford Hat factory prior to becoming a bank teller for the Haverhill Savings Bank. She was an officer of the Emblem Club, BPOE Haverhill Chapter.

Following retirement she and her husband of 56 years, William G. Collins, were proprietors of Cotton Mountain Cottages, Squam Lake, Holderness, N.H. She was a past president of the Holderness Chamber of Commerce.

A devoted family member, she loved to entertain family and friends. Survivors include her sons, Paul Tremblay of Jensen Beach, Fla. and William G. Collins Jr. of Bradford; grandchildren, Thomas Tremblay of Colchester, Conn., Jennifer Tremblay of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Mark Tremblay of Sanborton, N.H., Tracy Donahue of Palm City, Fla., Erin Moore of Wakefield; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the daughter of the late John Fenenko and the late Mary (Kuden) Fenenko. She was preceded in death by her husband William G. Collins.

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be scheduled in early summer at the Holderness Community Church, Holderness, N.H.





A. Russ Dallaire, 95

ORANGE CITY, Fla. | Mr. A. "Russ" Dallaire, 95, of Orange City, Fla., and former longtime Bradford resident, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at Merrill Gardens, Orange City, Fla.

He was born in Amesbury, March 10, 1912, son of the late Aime B and Exilda (Trottier) Dallaire.

Mr. Dallaire was educated in the Amesbury School System and graduated from Amesbury High School.

For over 40 years he was employed at the Haverhill Gazette. His career began in their Amesbury Office, covering Amesbury events. In 1947 he moved to Haverhill and worked from the Haverhill Office covering Police and Court reports. He then became an editor and columnist until his retirement in the late 1970s.

After his retirement he moved to Florida and was a contributor for the Lawrence Eagle Tribune's editorial page covering such topics as the City budget and taxes. Russ enjoyed carpentry and making doll houses, furniture and remodeling his home.

He was the husband of the late Laure C. (Couturier) Dallaire who died in 1999, and grandfather of the late Laurie A. (Dallaire) Henry who died in 2004. His survivors include a son, Paul N. and his wife Linda M. Dallaire of Bradford, a brother, George Dallaire of Salem, N.H., two grandchildren, Lynne Hartford of Florida, Paul Dallaire Jr. of Allston, two great-grandchildren, Josselyn and Cameron Henry of Denmark, Maine, as well as several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 So. Main St., Bradford, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in Sacred Hearts Church, Bradford. Entombment will be in Elmwood Mausoleum, Bradford. Harrison S. DeLong, 86

MERRIMAC | Harrison S. DeLong, 86, of Merrimac, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 4, 2008 at Hannah Duston Healthcare in Haverhill. He was the devoted husband of Irene M. (Syvinski) DeLong.

Born in Merrimac, June 9, 1921, he was the son of the late Howard L. and Elizabeth (Fraser) DeLong and was a graduate of the former Merrimac High School, Class of 1939. Mr. DeLong was the post master of the Merrimac Post Office as well as the Veterans' Service Officer for the Town of Merrimac, retiring in 1979.

During World War II, Mr. DeLong served with the United States Army from Sept. 16, 1940 to June 21, 1945, honorably discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant.

Mr. DeLong was an inventor, who invented a particular stamp canceling machine that post offices are still utilizing and invented a fire escape ladder that was installed at the former Whittier Hotel in Haverhill. He was an avid sports fan, interested in all sports.

In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his three sons, Michael H. DeLong and wife Priscilla A. and Richard V. DeLong and wife Cathy A., all of Bradford, and Christopher C. DeLong and wife Lillian of Haverhill; his sister, Eleanor Wroblewski of Greenland, N.H.; and his three grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Meghan and Jonathan of Bradford and Jennie of Haverhill; as well as several nieces and nephews, and his beloved mini dachshund, Rosie. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Howard L. DeLong Jr. and Donald DeLong. He will be dearly missed by his family and his many dear friends.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main St., Merrimac, will be Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Services from the funeral home will be Tuesday morning at 8:30 followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Nativity, Green Street, Merrimac, of the Holy Redeemer Parish. Private interment will be in Union Cemetery, Amesbury.





Nora M. Maroney

HAVERHILL | Nora M. "Nonie" (Lorigan) Maroney, a resident of Haverhill for 28 years, and of Andover for 33 years, died in St. Petersburg, Fla., after a very long struggle with Alzheimer's Disease.

She was born in Haverhill in 1918, one of five children, to Michael Lorigan and Elizabeth Murphy Lorigan, who had immigrated to Haverhill from Ireland.

She attended St. James Grammar School and graduated from Haverhill High School in 1937.

Her husband's career in chemical engineering took the family to many different places over the years | Portsmouth, N.H., OakRidge, Tenn., Baltimore, Morgantown, W.V. and eventually back to the Merrimack Valley to Andover.

She worked at Sutherland's Dept. Store there for several years and then found her true vocation | she became the House Keeper at St. Augustine's Church. For 25 years, she took care of the priests and of the rectory | cooking, cleaning organizing, and looking after the priests as if they were her sons. In 1989, she was affiliated to the Order of St. Augustine, an honor which was given to her because of her loving service to the Augustinians for so many years.

The widow of Walter Maroney, she is survived by her three children, Judith Churchman of St. Petersburg, Fla., Mary Corman and her husband Jim of Schenectady, N.Y. and Walter Maroney and his wife Karen Rosenberg of Manchester, N.H. She was a loving and supportive grandmother to Leigh Percival of Arlington, Timothy Percival of St. Petersburg, Fla., Elizabeth Corman of Seattle, Jennifer Corman of New York, N.Y. and Elias Rosenberg-Maroney and Ezekiel Maroney-Rosenberg of Manchester, N.H. She was truly loved by her four great-grandchildren, Allison, Jessica, Corey, and Martin. She was predeceased by her brothers, Michael (Harpy), and John and her sister, Anna, and she is survived by her brother, Joseph of Haverhill. Our "Nonie" was gentle, kind, humorous, non-judgmental, hard working and really giving of herself|-we all miss her enormously.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial Mass, which will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church in Andover. For many years, "Father Al" was Nonie's pastor and friend at St. Augustine's Church and supporting his work was always very important to her.





Irene E. O'Leary, 86

HAVERHILL | Irene E. (Homan) O'Leary, 86, of Haverhill, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2007 at the Hannah Duston Healthcare Center.

She was born in Haverhill, April 15, 1921, daughter of the late William and Laura (Dodier) Homan.

Irene was educated in the Haverhill Parochial Schools, and had been employed in the shoe industry and also at the former Woolworth's 5 and 10.

Irene was a member of All Saints Church and was involved in many Catholic organizations throughout her life.

She was married to the late John E. O'Leary who died in 1999, and her survivors include a son, Joseph J. and his wife Terri L. (Morse) O'Leary of Haverhill; a daughter, Irene Hollenbeck of Manchester, N.H.; a sister, Edith Landeck of Haverhill; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Friday at 10 a.m. from the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in All Saints Church, Haverhill. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Haverhill. Carl A. Palmeter Jr., 83

HAVERHILL | Carl A. Palmeter Jr., 83, of Haverhill, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Palmeter was born in Haverhill, March 1, 1924, son of the late Carl A. Sr. and Margaret (Collins) Palmeter.

He was a graduate of St. James Grammar School and St. James High School, Class of 1941. He attended Merrimack College and Boston University.

He was a lifelong member of St. James Parish.

During World War II, Mr. Palmeter enlisted into the U.S. Army earning the rank of sergeant in the Army Air Corp. Following World War II, he became a proud member of the AMVETS organization where he held the office of treasurer both locally for AMVETS Post 147 and state wide treasurer's office.

For many years he was employed as an accountant for the Gibbs Express Transportation Co. in Haverhill, retiring in 1984. He owned and operated a private accounting practice from his home for over 60 years serving people in the Haverhill area.

He was an avid bowler and golfer. He enjoyed crosswords and a friendly game of cards. He so cherished being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his beloved family. He was known to have a great sense of humor and was appointed president of the Kent St. Porch Puppy Association, and member of the American Turtle Association.

He leaves his former wife, Antoinette C. (DeSesa) Palmeter; four daughters, Carina and her husband Steven Jones, all of Haverhill, Jean Palmeter of San Francisco, Theresa Palmeter of Haverhill, and Susan Palmeter of Kingston, N.H.; a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Amy Palmeter of Mission Hills, Calif.; five grandchildren;two great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Fred Donahue of Bellingham; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Ryan.

Theresa Partain, 83

HAVERHILL | Mrs. Theresa (Gigliotti) Partain, 83, of Haverhill, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital, Haverhill.

She was born in Marlboro, March 8, 1924, daughter of the late Giuseppi and Angelina (DeFazio) Gigliotti. Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mrs. Partain graduated from Haverhill High School.

During World War II, Mrs. Partain served in the United States Army.

She retired from Lucent Technologies in 1985. Prior to Lucent Mrs. Partain was employed for the City of Haverhill in the City Clerk's Office.

An avid reader, she enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking, the Food Network and spending time with her family.

Mrs. Partain was the wife of the late James Partain who died in 1988 and her survivors include a daughter, Linda Partain and her fiance John Chambers of Smithfield, R.I.; a sister, Mary Pike and her husband Russell of Haverhill; a brother, James and his wife Marnie Gigliotti of Lebanon, Pa. She also leaves nieces and nephews, Gail Patriquin and her husband William of Haverhill, Michele Dunlap and her husband Edward of Tucson, Ariz., Alan Gigliotti and his wife Sue of Hampton, N.H., Brian Gigliotti and his wife Francine Valcourt of Lawrence, and James Joseph Gigliotti Jr. and his wife Onawa of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and great nieces and nephews, Bethany Tsioropoulos, Tiffany Corcoran, Michael and Sarah Dunlap, Ryan and Matthew Gigliotti, Christopher, Randy and Mary Gigliotti and Olivia Gigliotti. She leaves an aunt, Rose Sagan of Haverhill and cousins, Richard DeVito and his wife Joyce, James DeVito, and Pat Wiley and her husband David.

Vivian E. Sargent, 93

GREENFIELD | Vivian E. (Dyer) Sargent, 93, of Greenfield, formerly of Amesbury and Newton, N.H., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008 at Poet's Seat Health Care Center.

She was born in Rockland on April 12, 1914, the daughter of Harry and Catherine Dyer.

Vivian was a private duty licensed practical nurse until 1984. Previously, she was a LPN at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

She was a member of the Ladies Aid for the Newton Baptist Church in Newton, N.H.

Vivian was an avid reader.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Earle B. Nichols in 1947, and her second husband, Harold C. Sargent in 1961. Survivors include a son, Ned F. Nichols and his wife Valera of New Ipswich, N.H.; four grandchildren, Barbara, Robert, Gregory and Verity Nichols; and many nieces and nephews. Also, she was predeceased by two brothers, Daniel and Roy Dyer.

ARRANGEMENTS: A memorial service will be held at the Newton Baptist Church in Newton, N.H., in the spring on a date and time to be announced. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Newton.
