A World War II veteran, Carl A. Palmeter Jr. was a proud member of AMVETS. He served as treasurer for AMVETS Post 147 and also served as the organization's state-wide treasurer.
For many years, Mr. Palmeter, a father of five, was employed as an accountant for the Gibbs Express Transportation Co. in Haverhill, retiring in 1984. He owned and operated a private accounting practice from his home for over 60 years serving people in the Haverhill area.
"Family was very important to him and work was very important to him," said Mr. Palmeter's daughter, Susan Palmeter of Kingston, N.H. "He went to work everyday and was an old-fashioned guy."
On Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, Carl A. Palmeter Jr. died at his Haverhill home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Palmeter was 83.
"My father liked to do people's taxes. He liked to keep busy," Susan Palmeter said. "He also liked to be good at what he did."
And Mr. Palmeter, said his daughter, was a very good bowler and golfer.
"He loved to golf and bowl," she said.
Mr. Palmeter was born in Haverhill, March 1, 1924, son of the late Carl A. Sr. and Margaret (Collins) Palmeter.
He was a graduate of St. James Grammar School and St. James High School, Class of 1941, and attended Merrimack College and Boston University.
During World War II, Mr. Palmeter enlisted in the U.S. Army and earned the rank of sergeant in the Army Air Corps.
Along with golfing and bowling, Mr. Palmeter enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing a friendly game of cards. He was a member of the American Turtle Association.
"He was quiet, but he was very funny. He had a great sense of humor," Susan Palmeter said, noting that her father was appointed president of the "Kent St. Porch Puppy Association." "That's something the family came up with because my dad loved to talk to people when he was on the front porch. That's where we all gathered to talk."
Mr. Palmeter was a lifelong member of St. James Parish. He cherished being a father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his beloved family.
"He loved his family. It was very important to him," Susan Palmeter said.
Mr. Palmeter leaves his former wife, Antoinette C. (DeSesa) Palmeter; four daughters, Carina and her husband Steven Jones, all of Haverhill, Jean Palmeter of San Francisco, Theresa Palmeter of Haverhill and Susan Palmeter of Kingston, N.H.; a son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Amy Palmeter of Mission Hills, Calif.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Fred Donahue of Bellingham; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Ryan.
Arrangements were by the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St., Haverhill. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 7, with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated in St. James Church, Winter Street. A private burial will take place in St. James Cemetery.
