John F. Batchelder, 77

KINGSTON, N.H. | John F. Batchelder, 77, died at the Rockingham County Nursing Home in Brentwood, N.H. from a long and brave fight with cancer on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008.

Born in Jacksonville, Fla., and later residing in Kingston, N.H. where he was a loving and dedicated husband and father.

He served our country in the U.S. Navy from July, 1948 to July, 1952. He was awarded three medals of Honor and served aboard the U.S.S. Charles S. Speery (DD697), the U.S.S. Haynsworth (DD700), the U.S.S. Yellowstone (AD27), and the U.S.S. McCaffery (DD860) during the Korean War.

Later he had a career for many years as a carpenter/drywaller working in Boston, until his retirement in 1987.

He will be meeting his life partner and best friend, Ruth M. (Hicks) Batchelder, his mother and father, and three brothers. He leaves behind his daughter, Cheryl A. Wood and her spouse William T. Wood Sr. of East Kingston, N.H., his sons, Mark T. Batchelder and his spouse Melanie J. of Nashua, N.H., and Stephen J. Batchelder of Denver. His cherished grandchildren, William T. Wood Jr. of East Kingston and Brittany Lyn and Joshua Batchelder of Nashua, N.H., and many nieces and nephews.

His generous and kind spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

ARRANGEMENTS: Memorials can be made to Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. The Cremation Society of NH is in charge of arrangements and a private family ceremony.





Eileen F. Bean, 58

SHIRLEY | Eileen F. (Ryan) Bean, 58, of Shirley, died in Health Alliance Leominster Hospital Friday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2008 after a long battle with cancer.

Eileen was born on March 7, 1949 in Haverhill, the daughter of Richard and Geraldine (Granmaison) Ryan and lived in Haverhill many years. She was a graduate of St. James High School in Haverhill and also attended college at the University of New Hampshire and Merrimack College. She was a data processor for the Internal Revenue Service for the past five years in the Fitchburg office.

Eileen had a love for the theatre and theatre production with her close friends Paul and Dennis. She also had been a choir member at St. Anthony's Church in Shirley, and enjoyed reading and crocheting. She had attended Holy Angels Church in Plaistow, N.H.

She is survived by her husband of the last 10 and-a-half years, James R. Bean; her son, Roy Bean and his wife Michelle of Worcester; her daughter, Valerie Bean of Taunton; and a step daughter, Anne Audet of Darthmouth; her four brothers all of New Hampshire, Dennis Ryan, William Ryan, Mark Ryan and his wife Debbie, and Philip Ryan and his wife Cheryl; two sisters, Maureen Ryan of New Hampshire and Grace Ryan of Tennessee. She also leaves a grandson, Brandon Elliot, along with many nephews and nieces and her pal, Simba the cat. She was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Geraldine Ryan; and her brother, Kevin Ryan.

ARRANGEMENTS: A funeral Mass will be held in the spring on a day and time to be announced in Holy Angels Church in Plaistow, N.H. Internment will also be in the spring in Holy Angels Cemetery, Plaistow, N.H. There are no calling hours. The Lavery Chartrand & Alario Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, is assisting the family with all of the funeral arrangements.





Francis E. Berardino, 64

HAVERHILL | Francis E. "Frank" Berardino, 64, of Haverhill, formerly of Salem and Byfield, husband of the late Barbara (Mercer) Berardino, died Saturday, January 26, 2008, in Beverly Hospital. Born in Winthrop, he was the son of the late Emilio J. and Francesca (Campanella) Berardino. He was raised and educated in Lynnfield and was a graduate of Lynnfield High School.

Mr. Berardino was the proprietor of B & B Ceramics in Haverhill for many years.

He was a devout animal lover and loved spending time with his family. He was a long time resident of the City of Salem, the Town of Byfield and Haverhill.

Frank is survived by his three daughters, Tracy Soter and her husband Todd of Danvers, Robin Maloney of Danvers, and Dawn Berardino and her companion Daniel Donovan of Danvers; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral was held in the Peterson-O'Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (Rte. 62) Danvers, Wednesday, at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends were invited. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Visiting hour prior to service from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, please inquire at 978-774-6600. Sandra Z. Diamantakis, 45

PLAISTOW, N.H. | Sandra Z. Diamantakis, 45, of Plaistow, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 in Haverhill.

Born in Fair Lawn, N.J., daughter of the late Abram and Ida (Winograd) Zuckerman, she graduated from The University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with her degree in sociology and later from Worcester State College with a degree in occupational therapy.

Sandra was employed as an occupational therapist for local hospitals and most recently with her husband was the co-owner and operator of Steve's House of Pizza in Haverhill.

A resident of Plaistow since 2000, she was a former resident of Haverhill, Brookline and Worcester. She enjoyed reading, swimming, classical music, walking, and trips to Greece with her husband, and she was devoted to her cat.

She is survived by her husband, Vasilios "Bill" Diamantakis, a daughter, Antonia Abbey Diamantakis, both of Plaistow, a brother-in-law, Costas Diamantakis, of Lynn, a sister, an uncle and several extended family members in Greece.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial in Plaistow Cemetery.







James L. Flood Jr., 55

HAVERHILL | James L. Flood Jr., 55, of Haverhill, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008 at his residence.

Mr. Flood was born in Lawrence, on July 28, 1952, son of the late James J. and Marie (Benoit) Flood. He was educated in the Lawrence schools and was a graduate of Lawrence High School.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving four years in the United States Coast Guard from 1970 until 1974. After his military service he attended and was a graduate of Northern Essex Community College, Haverhill.

For the past sic years he had been an administrator with Community Action, Haverhill. Previously he had been an administrator at Bradford College, Haverhill. Mr. Flood had been a resident of Haverhill for the past 26 years and previously resided in Lawrence.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen A. (Raferty) Flood of Haverhill; his two sons, Matthew E. Flood of Haverhill and Colin P. Flood of Haverhill; and his three stepsons, Christian M. Stearns of Haverhill, Nickolas F. Stearns of Cape Canaveral, Fla., and Michael J. Stearns of Lowell.

ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m. in the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Haverhill Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill. Calling hours at the C. Interment will be Friday morning in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Lawrence.





Kathie L. Gauthier, 22

HAVERHILL | Kathie L. Gauthier, 22, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 in Montgomery, Tenn.

Ms. Gauthier was born in Ft. Pierce and lived back and forth between Ft. Pierce and Haverhill.

Katie was a correctional officer.

She was a very proud godmother to Emma; was a fun, energetic, intelligent, and very strong willed woman. Her heart was endless in giving and helping people. She was loved and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her father, Frank Gauthier of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; mother, Paula Holloran of Green Acres, Fla.; step-mother, Lori Gauthier of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; paternal grandmother, Ann Gauthier of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; sister, Kimberley Denoncourt of Derry, N.H.; brothers, Frankie Gauthier of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Kyle Holloran of Key Largo, Fla., Dante, Lucas and Nicco Gauthier all of Ft. Pierce, Fla. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Alfred Gauthier and uncle, Alfred Gauthier Jr.; nephew, Jamie Gauthier and cousin, Michael Faircloth.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Haisley Funeral Home. A service was held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Oleander Avenue Church of God. David G. Hailson, 68

PLAISTOW, N.H. | Mr. David G. Hailson, 68, of Plaistow, and formerly Haverhill, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2008 at his residence.

He was born in Methuen April 3, 1939, son of the late Daniel and Evelyn (Dow) Hailson, was educated in the Methuen Public Grammar Schools, and was a graduate of Haverhill Trade School.

In 1970, Dave joined the Haverhill Fire Dept and was assigned to the Essex Street, Water Street and 16th avenue stations. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves and the National Guard.

Dave was a simple man who was devoted to his family and his church.

He was a member of the Firefighters Union Local 1011, Served as a Trustee at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, and had served on the Board of Noah's Ark Day Care Center at the Church..

His survivors include his wife of 44 years, Anne C. (Comeau) Hailson of Plaistow, two sons David G. Hailson II, and his wife Claire of Haverhill, James D. and his wife Brenda M. Hailson of Plaistow, a daughter Ellen J. and her husband Kenneth R. Palmer of Haverhill, nine grandchildren, Meghann, Katie, Caroline, Brianna, Mandi, and Sarah Hailson, Jake, Justin and Joshua Palmer, and several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to his funeral Monday at 11 a.m. at the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, 284 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill. Spring burial will be in the family lot at Hillside Cemetery. Ethel Mandell, 99

LOS ANGELES | Ethel (Rich) Mandell, 99, died peacefully at home in Los Angeles, Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008.

She was born in Haverhill on Sept. 16, 1908.

Ethel was preceded in death by her sisters, Sophia (Rich) Brownstein and Clara Rich, both lifelong residents of Haverhill. All three sisters lived to 99 years of age, following the example of their mother Hannah (Fishkes) Rich, who lived to be 104. Ethel was also preceded in death by her daughter, Lyn Avnet; and by Harry Mandell, her beloved husband of 59 years, with whom she relocated to Southern California following his military service in World War II.

She will be remembered always by her granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Stephanie and Bryan Yates of Los Angeles, and by cousin Maureen Rich of Rockport.

The family is grateful to nurse Jenny Valenton, whose expert care allowed Ethel to spend her last years comfortably at home.

One of Ethel's lifelong passions was playing the mandolin; another was reading to the blind as a Braille volunteer.

ARRANGEMENTS: In accordance with Ethel's wishes, her body has been donated for scientific research, and no memorial service is planned. Donations in her memory may be made to the Braille Institute, to be applied to the Junior Blind Division.





William L. Murphy, 79

NORTH ANDOVER | William L. Murphy, 79, of North Andover and formerly of Haverhill, passed away at his home on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008 after a brief illness surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Murphy was born and raised in Haverhill to the late Richard T. and Ann (Nolan) Murphy.

William worked for 34 years at AT&T as a maintenance mechanic before retiring in 1990.

Mr. Murphy was a communicant of St. Michael Church in North Andover and proudly served his country with the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Murphy is survived by his loving wife, Virginia M. (Kaslow) Murphy with whom they would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on Feb. 3, 2008; his children, Kathleen Murphy of Middleton, Margaret Bailey and her husband William of Haverhill and Ellen Murphy of North Andover; his granddaughter, Meghan Abrams of Waltham; and his siblings, Edward of North Kingston, R.I., Joseph and Leo both of Haverhill, James of Newburyport, Marguerite Murphy of Haverhill and Marilyn Hefferan of Plaistow, N.H.; as well as several nieces and nephews. William was predeceased by his brother, Richard and his son-in-law, Kenneth Gallant.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend his funeral Mass on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008 at 10 a.m. at St. Michael Church, 196 Main St., North Andover. Interment followed with Military Honors at Ridgewood Cemetery in North Andover. At the families request, there are no calling hours.
