Bradford — Herbert S. Welford, Sr., 91, of Lynnfield and formerly of Wakefield and Bradford, died May 21, at the V.A.Hospital of West Roxbury. Born in Wakefield, Aug. 22, 1922, the son of the late George and Annie (Slater) Welford. Mr. Welford was raised in Wakefield and was a graduate of Wakefield High School, Class of 1941 and remained in Wakefield where he raised his family, leaving Wakefield in 1976. He was a longtime federal employee and retired as an Auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. He was a proud Veteran of WW II and served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific. Mr. Welford enjoyed many hobbies, including landscaping, caring for his dogs, camping and fishing. Devoted to his grandchildren, he enjoyed attending their sporting events and recitals.
Mr. Welford was the beloved husband of the late Priscilla (Gauthier) and Rose T. (Bradford). He was the loving father of Steven and wife, Andrea (Iovini) of Newmarket, N.H., Lawrence R. and wife, Carol (Hanson) of Spotsylvania, Va. and Marijane and wife, Karen Turnquist of Wakefield and his son in-law, John A. Hancock of Reading. He was the grandfather of Laura and partner, Frank Jarek, Greg and wife, Jolene (Lynch), Meghan (Welford) Horton and husband, Kyle, Dan Hancock and wife, Leah (Jones) and Alexandra and Garrett Hancock; great-grandfather of Autumn, Zachary, Isabella and Frankie. He was also the brother of the late Kenneth, Lester, Stanley and George Welford.
ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral will be held in the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield, on Thursday at 11 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends were held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Bradford.
