Veronica Arnold, 95

HUDSON, N.H. | Veronica "Verna" Arnold, 95, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007 at Fairview Nursing Home in Hudson, N.H.

She was born in Haverhill, Jan. 13, 1912 daughter of Michael and Marcella (Anasavitz) Gaznick. She had resided in Pelham, N.H. since 1998. She was a former member of St. George's Parish, and was a wood heeler at the former Karelis Wood Heel Co.

She was the wife of the late Lee Arnold. She is survived by three nieces, Priscilla Pike-Church of Pelham, N.H.; Kathleen Diers of Hooksett, N.H.; and Linda Blekicki of New Durham, N.H. She is also survived by several great-nieces and great-nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Her funeral was held Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Scatamacchia Funeral Home, 358 Washington St., Haverhill. Elizabeth M. Battles, 76

HAVERHILL | Elizabeth M. Battles, 76, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007. 

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Jan. 25, 1931, daughter of John and Blanche (Reichert) Gould. She had been a resident of Haverhill for the past 50 years.  

She was a member of the former St. George's Parish, the Haverhill Women's Club, and the Pioneers of New England Telephone. Mrs Battles also did volunteer work for  the Don Orione Fathers in Bradford. She was a telephone operator for NYNEX until her retirement.

She was the wife of the late Thomas Battles. She is survived a son and his wife, Thomas and Christine Battles of Sandown, N.H.; a brother, John Gould of Leesburg, Fla.; two sisters and their husbands, Marion and John Graney of Petersborough, N.C. and Diane and Ray Glass of Limestone, Tenn. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was also mother of the late Edward Giblin.

Giovanina R. Bennett, 86

SHAPLEIGH, Maine | Giovanina "Jennie" R. Bennett, 86, of Village Circle in Shapleigh, Maine, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007.

She was born in Haverhill on Feb. 28, 1921, a daughter of Emilo J. and Maria (DiPirro) Villetta and graduated from Haverhill High School.

She married Willis Bennett on Feb. 12, 1940 in Sanford, Maine and made their home in Down East Maine in the town of Ellsworth. She and Willis ran Jen's Drive-In on Route One for over 18 years. She wore many hats from cooking, waitressing and ordering supplies week to week. With her hard work ethic, Jennie worked at local shoe factories to help the family.

Jennie possessed a heart of gold. She was extremely devoted to her family and though she lived away from her brothers and sisters, they always made the effort to be together for Christmas at home in Haverhill. With her husband, she traveled through out the United States and across Canada in their reliable Ford car. Jennie was not only beautiful on the inside, but she took great care with her stylish clothes and having her hair done weekly. She put people's needs before her own and she will deeply missed by her family and longtime friends.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Willis "Bob" Bennett of Shapleigh; two daughters, Judy Swanburg of Atkinson, N.H. and Dorothy Bennett of Groveland; one granddaughter, Carol Swanburg of Atkinson, N.H.; and by one brother, Raymond Villetta of Ossipee, N.H. She was predeceased by her parents and five siblings.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends visited on Tuesday, Nov. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., Alfred where a prayer service was held at 6:30 p.m. Committal prayers and burial will be held at a later date at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Haverhill. David W. Bohanan, 53

HAVERHILL | David W. Bohanan, 53, of Haverhill, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007 at Lawrence General Hospital, following a long illness.

Born in Haverhill, son of the late Clifford and Ella (Dunn) Bohanan, he was a lifelong resident of the city and attended local schools and Haverhill High School.

David was employed as the general manager of Acme Canvass/Century Products for 28 years before illness forced his retirement.

He was an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan and enjoyed motorcycling, sports cars, medical and legal dramas and country music.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Lorette A. (Legault) Bohanan; two sons, Jason A. Bohanan and his wife Melanie of Haverhill, and Nicholas D. Bohanan and his fiance Melissa of Methuen; two brothers, Clifford Bohanan of Haverhill, Richard "Dicky" Bohanan of Orange; a sister Carol Costa of Lowell, a granddaughter Kai Bohanan of Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son Jonathan Bohanan in 1981.

ARRANGEMENTS: Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Berube-Comeau Funeral Home, 47 Broadway, Haverhill. A memorial service will follow at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ronald G. Brown Sr., 72

HAVERHILL | Ronald G. Brown Sr., 72, a lifelong Haverhill resident, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007.

He was born in Haverhill, Feb. 18, 1935, son of the late Gardner C. and Doris (Bilodeau) Brown.

Educated in the Haverhill school system, Mr. Brown served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

He was a member of the AMVETS Post 147, Haverhill, American Legion, Post 34, Plaistow, N.H., and the Crescent Yacht Club, Bradford.

For several years he was a self-employed flooring contractor.

His survivors include a son, Ronald G. Brown Jr. of Haverhill; a daughter, Debbi-Lyn Trager and her husband Michael of Connecticut. He was the father of the late Alan and Ronald G. (Gary) Brown. He also leaves a brother, Kenneth A. Brown and his wife Rose Marie of Haverhill; a sister, Maureen Rowe of Haverhill; three grandchildren, Stacy of Florida, Tiffany of Haverhill, and Alexandra of Connecticut; as well as several nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: Calling hours for Mr. Brown were Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the H.L. Farmer & Sons Funeral Home, 106 Summer St., Haverhill, followed by a graveside service at 11:15 a.m. in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Haverhill. Charles A. Griggs Sr., 94

HAVERHILL | Charles A. Griggs Sr., 94, of Haverhill, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007 at Penacook Place, Haverhill.

Mr. Griggs was born in Haverhill on July 11, 1913, son of the late George H. and Grace E. (Laing) Griggs.

He had been a resident of Bradford and Merrimac and more recently a resident of Haverhill.

He had been employed as a sergeant with the security department of Sanders Associates, Inc., Nashua, N.H. until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of Sacred Hearts Parish, Bradford; Haverhill Lodge of Elks, No. 165, BPOE; Christ the King Council, Knights of Columbus, No. 5004; the Exeter, N.H., Assembly, Fourth Degree, K of C.

He and his wife, Irene D. (Ladebush) Griggs celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary in May of 2007.

Mr. Griggs is survived by his wife, Irene D. (Ladebush) Griggs of Haverhill; his daughter, Gail A. Gillen of Merrimac; his two sons, Charles A. Griggs Jr. and his wife Mary of Newton, N.H. and Robert M. Griggs of Merrimac; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

ARRANGEMENTS: The funeral will be held Thursday, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. from the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Haverhill Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill, followed by a funeral Mass of Christian burial in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel of Sacred Hearts Church, 165 Main St., Bradford at 10:30 a.m. Interment in Linwood Cemetery, Mill Street, Haverhill. Visitation at the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Haverhill Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill will be held Thursday morning from 9 to 10 a.m.

James B. Jacobs, 75

HAVERHILL | James B. Jacobs, 75, of Haverhill, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007 at his residence.

He was born in Haverhill on Sept. 16, 1932, son of the late James J. and Veronica S. (Butler) Jacobs and had been a resident of Haverhill all his life.

He was educated in St. James School and St. James High School, Haverhill.

Until his retirement he had been employed in Haverhill shoe manufacturing firms.

He was a member of St. James Parish, Haverhill.

After his mother's death in 1932, shortly after his birth, and his father's death in 1933, Jim was brought up by his late aunt, Margaret C. Butler of Haverhill.

He is survived by his brother, Thomas R. Jacobs of Lawrence; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Jim was the brother of the late Robert, William, John, Daniel and Suzanne Jacobs.

Frank Linnehan & Son Haverhill Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill followed by a funeral Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. James Church, 185 Winter St., Haverhill. Interment followed in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill. Visitation at the C. Frank Linnehan & Son Haverhill Funeral Home, 129 Kenoza Ave., Haverhill, was Wednesday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
