Lewis R. Adams, 92
ATKINSON, N.H. | Col. Lewis R. "Bob" Adams, 92, a career Army officer, died in his home Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 following a long illness. Col. Adams was the husband of Betty-Anne (Hardy) Adams.
Born in Bradford Oct. 7, 1915, he was the son of the late George A. and Elinor (Sheehan) Adams.
Upon graduating from Amesbury High School and Hebron Academy he attended Norwich University, graduating in 1939 with a degree in science.
He then entered the Army and began a long and illustrious military career, earning numerous decorations including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Army Commendation Medal. Also during his 30 years of commissioned service he held several command and staff positions, including command of a tank battalion in Europe during the war, a training battalion at Ft. Knox following the war, and three U.S. Constabulary Squadrons during the occupation of Germany. Later he served with the headquarters of U.S. Forces European Theatre in Frankfort. Upon his return to the states he served a three year tour as Professor of Military Science and Tactics at the University of Mass at Amherst. He later served with the Army Electronic Proving Ground in Arizona on the Staff and Faculty of the Army Command and Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, with the Seventh Logistical Command in Korea, and as deputy president of the Armor and Engineer Board at Ft. Knox.
Following his retirement at Ft. Knox in 1968, he moved with his family to Atkinson where he worked as a journalist, photographer, and columnist at the Haverhill Gazette.
Beside his wife of 65 years, he is survived by his son, Lewis R. Adams Jr. and his wife Doris of Weston, Fla.; daughters, Wendy Adams of New York, N.Y., Traci Adams-Mitchell and her husband Scott of Buena Park, Calif.; and grandchildren, Brooke Ferguson, Keaven Adams and Enzo Mitchell. He was the brother of the late Charles S. Adams.

Stella Alartosky, 93
HAVERHILL | Stella (Disorbo) Alartosky, 93, of Haverhill, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at Hannah Duston Long Term Health Care Center, Haverhill, after a brief illness.
Mrs. Alartosky was born in Haverhill, on Aug. 9, 1914, the eldest child of the late Joseph Disorbo of Naples, Italy, and Angelina (DeMarco) Disorbo-Brady of New York State.
She was educated in the Haverhill schools and had been employed with Lucent Technologies, Inc., (Western Electric Co.), North Andover, until her retirement in 1973.
She had been a member of the former St. Rita's Parish, Haverhill.
She was the wife of the late Francis J. Alartosky for 21 years until his death on Aug. 24, 1958/ For 14 years she was the companion of the late Eric Barrett of Wilmington, and Mims, Fla.
Mrs. Alartosky is survived by her son, Richard F. Alartosky of Boston and New York; her sister, Mary Fitton of Groveland; and two brother, John Disorbo of Haverhill, and Frank Disorbo of Houlton, Maine; and several cousins, nieces and nephews throughout New England, New York, Pennsylvania and Florida.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Rita Disorbo of Haverhill, Bettina Cook of Bradford and Phyllis Cheney of Kennebunk, Maine; and her late brother, Joseph (aka "Paddy") Disorbo of Lawrence.
For many years she was under the devoted care of her house/garden person, Michael Russo of Haverhill; and for the past year she was able to continue living in her own residence through the attentive devotion of her in-home healthcare aide, Carol Tudesca of Salem, N.H.

Irene E. Boucher, 90
HAVERHILL | Irene E. (Raymond) Boucher, 90, of Haverhill, died suddenly at her home on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008.
Born in Amesbury, daughter of the late Hormidas and Lauria (Faubert) Raymond, she moved to Haverhill as a child and attended local schools.
Mrs. Boucher was a housewife and homemaker and member of Most Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Mission of South Lawrence and a former member of St. Joseph Parish of Haverhill and the Ladies of St. Anne Society.
She enjoyed bingo and playing cards with her family.
The wife of the late Peter L. Boucher, she is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Paul R. and Peggy Boucher of Haverhill, Gerard R. and Janet Boucher of Haverhill, Alfred P. and Donna Boucher of Salem, N.H. and Raymond A. and Melinda Boucher of Kittery, Maine; a daughter, Janet I. DiBiaso of Exeter, N.H.; two brothers, Phillip Raymond and Robert Raymond, both of Beech Grove, Ind.; a sister, Rita Baehr of Pittsburgh; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Marilyn F. Cooke, 86
HAVERHILL | Marilyn F. (Durant) Cooke, 86, died Sunday evening, Jan. 20, 2008 at Anna Jaques Hospital. Mrs. Cooke was the wife of the late Walter R. Cooke.
Born in Haverhill, Jan. 23, 1921, Mrs. Cooke was the daughter of the late Charles W. and Hilda A. (Johnson) Durant.
Marilyn was a graduate of Groveland High School, Class of 1938.
She worked for the Social Security Administration in Haverhill for 30 years until her retirement 1975.
Upon her and Walter's retirement they spent 15 years vacationing in Florida during the winter until Walter's death in 1994 after 41 years of marriage.
Marilyn enjoyed reading and following her grandchildren to their many activities. She will be sorely missed by her son and family.
Marilyn is survived by her son, Richard M. Cooke and his wife Stephanie (Smith); grandchildren, Cameron G. and Channing S. Cooke, all of Haverhill; her close cousin, Emily "Betty" Shanahan of Haverhill; sisters-in-law, Mary Walsh-Durant of Peabody, Marilyn (Cooke) Cull of Dorchester; brothers-in-law, James I. "Bud" Cooke of Davie, Fla., D. Allen Cooke and his wife Marge of Lake Placid, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles W. "Bud" Durant.

Janet M. Guzuski, 74
METHUEN | Janet M. (Carr) Guzuski, 74, of Methuen, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at Caritas Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, following a long illness.
Born in Haverhill, she attended Haverhill public schools and Haverhill High School. After raising her family, she attended and graduated from the nursing program at Northern Essex Community College.
A licensed practical nurse, Mrs. Guzuski worked for the Haverhill VNA, Lawrence General Hospital and Academy Manor of Andover.
A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Mrs. Guzuski was a volunteer for Merrimack Valley Hospice for several years. She was also a member of the Massachusetts Nurses Association.
The wife of John A. Guzuski, who died in !992, she was also the daughter of the late Ruth (Packer) (Carr) Bruedle. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Daniel H. and Linda A. Kight of Lawrence; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cinda and Armen Derderian of Methuen, Susan and Guy Vittorioso of Salem, N.H. and Barbara and Charlie Forester of York, Maine; a sister, Shirley Tilton of Haverhill; two brothers, Edmund Bruedle of Haverhill and Robert Bruedle of Middleton, N.H.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Walter McKinley Hellen, 90
AMESBURY | Walter McKinley Hellen, 90, of Amesbury died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at Amesbury Village. He was the husband of Margaret (Cook) Hellen.
He was born in Bridgewater on March 5, 1917, the son of the late James A. and Nettie (McKinley) Hellen and graduated from Amesbury High School in 1935. He was a nuclear foreman for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Walter was a selectman for the Town of Amesbury for 16 years and was also treasurer for the town. He served on the Board of Investments of the Provident Bank in Amesbury. He was a member of the Market Street Baptist Church in Amesbury and the Warren Lodge A.F. & A.M.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Jacqueline "Jackie" Reid Hellen of Bridgeport, Conn., Robert M. Hellen of Pawcatuck, Conn. and Sharon Lee Mosher of Swampscott; two brothers, James Hellen of Durham, N.H. and Douglas Hellen of Mechanic Falls, Maine; two sisters, Alice West of E. Kingston, N.H. and Virginia Wadleigh of Hampton, N.H.; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Barbara J. Hilliard, 83
HAVERHILL | Barbara Jane (Lovett) Hilliard, 83, of Haverhill, and Melbuurne, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at Penacook Place after a lengthy illness.
She was born in the Bradford section of Haverhill, daughter of the late George W. and Daisy M. (Fredette) Lovett and was a Graduate of Haverhill High School Class of 1942. She enlisted into the U.S. Navy and proudly served her country during World War II.
After the war she continued her education at the McIntosh Business School.She was employed as a book keeper in the accounting department for the Borden Chemical Co. in North Andover, previously working for Exeter Co-Op Bank, Exeter, and McGregor-Smith Motor Sales, Haverhill, most recently she worked at the Haffners Gas Station in Lafayette Square for over 15 years.
She loved traveling, upon retirement she sailed down the east coast and relocated to Melbourne, where she stayed for 10 years. Missing her family and New England roots she returned to Haverhill.
She leaves three daughters, Kathleen Wasson of Derry, N.H., Karen L. Wright of Dayton, Ohio and Doreen R. Hilliard of Haverhill; four grandchildren, Adele Wasson, John Wasson, Greg Hilliard and Adam Wright; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Theresa J. Kalaus, 80
HAVERHILL | Theresa J. (Gablosky) Kalaus, 80, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at Penacook Place.
She was born in Plaistow, N.H., Sept. 30, 1927, daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Lavoie) Gablosky.
She was educated in Haverhill schools. Mrs. Kalaus was a member of the Lorraine Post V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary.
She was formerly employed as a bookkeeper for the towns of West Newbury, Merrimac, and Groveland, retiring from Town of Groveland in 1994.
She was the wife of the late Walter Kalaus. She is survived by a son and his wife, Michael and Mary Kalaus of Bradford; and a daughter and her husband, Sandra and James Dow of Plaistow, N.H.; two brothers and their wives, Robert and Patricia Gablosky of Haverhill and Richard and Gina Gablosky of Sandown, N.H.; one sister and her husband, Cecile and Hank Suprin of Lady Lakes, Fla.; four grandchildren, Jeremy Dow of Boston, Jarrett Dow of Plaistow, N.H., Michael Kalaus and Nicole Kalaus, both of Bradford.

Robert E. Kimball Sr., 61
HAVERHILL | Robert E. Kimball Sr., 61, of Haverhill, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital after a long courageous battle with diabetes.
He was born in Haverhill, son of Lee M. and Edith M. (Pickles) Kimball and lived here all of his life. He was a graduate of Haverhill High School Class of 1964. Upon graduation he enlisted into the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country on the U.S.S. Zellars, DD-777 during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Kimball worked all of his life in the construction industry as an independent contractor. He was employed by various companies in the Haverhill area including Al Crepeau Construction and Early and Son's. More recently he was a partner in A & A Construction Co. retiring in the early 1990's due to illness. He also managed the former Riverview Drive-in Theater in Haverhill.
He was an avid race car fan who was involved with many local racing teams, his latest venture being with J.R. Baril Racing Team where he was known as "Rooster". He was a member of the AMVETS post 147, Haverhill. He spent many days at Crescent Farms in Ward Hill with his friends and enjoyed going for rides and taking in the local scenery with his daughter and dog, Oreo.
He is survived by his son, Robert E. Kimball Jr., and his fiance, Gretchen Rothrock, of Salem, N.H.; two daughters, Stacy P. Sullivan of Riverview, Fla., Melissa L. and her husband Lorin J. Clark; his mother, Edith M. (Pickles) Kimball; a sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor J. and James A. Guyot, all of Haverhill; six grandchildren, Michael, Chelsea, and Andrea Kimball of Salem, N.H., Alisandra "Lexi" Antonakis, Olivia and Haleigh Sullivan of Riverview, Fla.; aunt, Ruth Giarruso of North Andover; and several cousins. He also leaves former wives, Kathleen S. Jackson and Diana M. (Ricci) Nissen.
His father, Lee Myron Kimball, died in 1985.

Carmine Parrella, 90
PLAISTOW, N.H. | Carmine Parrella, 90, of Plaistow, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
Born and educated in Brooklyn, N.Y., son of the late Antonio and Carmela (Mannetta) Parrella, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.
Following his discharge from the service, Mr. Parrella attended machinist school and was employed for many years at Sperry Gyroscope of Great Neck, N.Y.
A resident of Plaistow since 1998, Mr. Parrella moved here from Batavia, Ill. and was a former longtime resident of Plainview, Long Island, N.Y.
He enjoyed music and was an accomplished violinist. He also enjoyed woodworking and metal fabricating.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Fannie (Curatolo) Parrella; a daughter, Camille Freitag of Sandown; a grandson, James Freitag and his wife Bethany of Dover, N.H.; two sisters, Helen Rugnetta of Mineola, N.Y. and Connie Barth of Medford, N.Y.; also several nieces and nephews.

Luise L. Peemot, 88
HAVERHILL | Luise L. (Lissak) Peemot, 88, of Bradford, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
She was born in Germany on March 21, 1919, daughter of the late Fritz and Anna (Windisch) Lissak.
She attended school in Germany and came to the U.S. in 1951 residing in Bradford. She was employed by the Dean of the former Bradford College and retired in 1982, from Western Electric after 20 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
She was the wife of the late Kristof Peemot who died in 1960, and is survived by her sister, Mia Bialas of Essen, Germany; dear friends, Erika Pinkham of Scarborough, Maine, Georgia Breyer of Harpswell, Maine, Peter Staples of Groveland, Susan Scaglione of Haverhill and Amy Kippin of Methuen; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Leslie S. Radnay, 95
MELROSE | Dr. Leslie S. Radnay, 95, of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital.
He was born in Szolnok, Hungary, May 26, 1912, son of the late Ferenc and Ida (Varsa) Radnai, and received his education in Hungary, including a doctorate in both Law and Physics. He was a Holocaust survivor who spent the duration of the war in forced labor camps.
In February of 1957, he and his family escaped from Hungary and came to the United States in 1959. In 1966 they settled in Melrose, where he resided until his death.
Dr. Radnay was employed as an engineer at Raytheon in Bedford and had worked in the missile systems division until his retirement in 1977.
He was an active amateur radio operator for over 80 years. In the United States his handle was WA1FHU and then W1PL. He was actively involved in many ham radio organizations including the American Radio Relay League (AARL) and the First Operators' Club (FOC).
He was a generous mentor and friend to generations of ham radio operators throughout the world.
Dr. Radnay is was married to the late Olga (Friedmann) Radnay and his survivors include by daughter, Eva Rajczyk and husband Adam of Haverhill; daughter, Katalin Baltimore and husband Bob of Orange, Conn.; grandchildren, Daniel, Lisa, Gwen, and Rick; great-grandchildren, Kyle and Ryan.

Gertrude Sandler, 85
FRAMINGHAM | Gertrude (Givner) Sandler, 85, of Framingham, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at the Sudbury Pines Nursing Home.
She was born in New York, Feb. 23, 1922, daughter of the late Morris and Anna (Nelson) Givner, was educated in the New York Public Schools and was a graduate of Midwood High School.
With her husband Jack she formerly resided at the Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly in Brighton.
Her survivors include her husband of 59 years, Jack Sandler of Sudbury; a son, Mark and his wife Diane Sandler of Framingham; two grandchildren, Rebecca and David Sandler of Framingham; a sister, Phyllis Sperling of Davey, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Sumner I. Smith, 94
GLASTONBURY, Conn. | Sumner I. Smith, 94, of Glastonbury, Conn., formerly of Haverhill, lost his battle with cancer on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at The Glastonbury Health Care Center. Sumner was the husband of the late Elizabeth Jordan Smith.
He was born in Haverhill on Aug. 2, 1913, son of the late Forress and Lucinda (Belmer) Smith.
In 1941 he moved to Connecticut, where he was employed for over 30 years as a machinist for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft. In the early 70s he moved to Florida where he managed apartment complexes in Miami and later West Palm Beach, and returned to Connecticut in 1999.
Sumner was a 32nd Degree Freemason and member of the Shriners' Band. Sumner was an accomplished craftsman, particularly skilled in cabinetry, and handicrafts, but his greatest love was baking | he was a master of pies, cakes and breads.
His survivors include a son, Jordan F. and his wife Christina (Meggie) Smith with whom he has resided for several years; two grandchildren, Sara E. and Peter J. Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy M. Thomas, 70
HAVERHILL | Dorothy M. (Gradington) Thomas, formerly of Haverhill, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2007 at St. David Hospital, Austin. She was 70.
Dorothy was born Jan. 29, 1937 in Georgetown, Texas, daughter of the late Robert and Bertha (Benford) Gradington and was a graduate of Georgetown High School.
She resided in Haverhill for many years and was employed at Western Electric/AT&T; Technology for over 17 years, before returning to Texas. She was married to the late William Roger Thomas, who passed in 1972.
She is survived by a sister, Jean Sanders; nieces, Candace Cavanaugh, Rachel Cavanaugh and Jessica Cavanaugh; cousin, Annie Williams; brother-in-law, Sidney Clark Jr. of Austin ; and a host of friends.

Haverhill — Hazel M. (Lothrop) Chase, 97, of Haverhill passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Penacook Place in Haverhill. She was born in Haverhill on Aug. 27, 1914, daughter of the late Horace W. and Lillian M. (Ward) Lothrop. She was employed at the former Hoyt & Worthen Tannery in Bradford. Hazel was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the White Shrine in Haverhill. Hazel enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She was the wife of the late Harold F. Chase and is survived by her sons Sterling A. Hammer of Camp Verde, AZ and William D. Hammer and his wife Carolanne of Bradford, step-son Harold W. Chase and his wife Gail of Windsor, CT, grandchildren Eric Hammer, Sterling Hammer, Jr., Lynn Fyfe, William D. Hammer, Jr., Laurel Chase, Karen Koch, Courtney Peterson, great grandchildren Liam and Brenna Fyfe and Shelby Koch, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Haverhill — Jean J. Karambelas, 64, of Boston and formerly of Haverhill, died unexpectedly Friday night, May 18, at Tufts Medical Center, Boston. She was born in Haverhill, July 4, 1947 daughter of Connie (Terzis) Karambelas and the late George Karambelas. She was educated in the Haverhill school system, Fisher Junior College and Northeastern University. She worked as a Systems Analyst for Bank of Boston and John Hancock where she retired from in 1997. Jean was a resident in Boston’s where she served on the Board of Directors of her apartment building and was a member of the Back Bay Association. She studied piano, was an avid reader and enjoyed international travel.

He was a graduate of Haverhill Trade School class of 1969. He also earned his associates degree in HVAC at NHTC. He's survived by his wife, Janice (Lajoie) Fowler of NH. and his children Jessica Fowler of FL., Robert E. Fowler III of MA., and Joshua Fowler of NH. He's also survived by his brothers Thomas Fowler of FL, James Fowler of ME. and sisters Donna Fowler of MA., Bonnie (Fowler) Lajoie and husband Donald Lajoie of FL. He was a devoted grandfather to his 7 grandchildren. He also had 7 sister-in-laws and 8 brother-in-laws. There are several nieces, nephews, and cousins too.

Annmarie Gillis, 49, of Haverhill, died suddenly May 4, 2012 at her home. A dear daughter of Alex and Linda Gillis of Brockton, she graduated from Brockton High School in 1980 and from Northern Essex Community College. She worked in the food and beverage industry for many years including Rockingham Park in Salem NH and recently at Andover Country Club. She loved decorating, gardening, fashion and world traveling; she had many fun-filled vacations all over with family and friends. Annmarie was a very kind and generous person who helped many with her love and support; she will be sadly missed by all her friends and especially by her family who loved her very much. She was the beloved sister of Catherine Powers and her husband Michael of Brookfield CT, Donna Wolfe and her husband William of Bridgewater, Michael Gillis of Bridgewater and David Gillis of Orlando FL; and loving auntie of Michael and Andrew Gillis of Bridgewater.

He was the husband of the late Jennie (Gorka) Oberti. He is survived by a daughter Janice Oberti of Haverhill. A sister Clementina "Tina" LaCarubba of Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews.

Salvatore (Sam) Palermo, 84
Salvatore A. (Sam) Palermo died peacefully in Fort Myers, Florida on January 3, 2012 after a brief illness. Son of Ignazio and Lucy Palermo, Sam was born in Haverhill on March 3, 1927. Sam was a proud graduate of Haverhill Trade School and entertained at many family gatherings by singing the Haverhill Trade School school song. After graduation, Sam obtained his electrician’s license and later joined his father in the family fuel business, Haverhill Charcoal, eventually taking over and turning it into Palermo Fuel & Oil Company, which later evolved into Ronnie’s Oil. Sam worked closely with his eldest son, Stephen Palermo, who eventually took over the family business until his death in 2000 .

Mr Albert F. Moses 81, passed away Friday April 20th 2012 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, Ma following a brief illness. Born in Newburyport, Ma to the late Albert F. Moses Sr and Gladys (Mayes) Moses Manuel. He was raised in the Salem, Ma and was educated in the Salem School System. He was an outstanding athlete excelling in football and was a longtime fixture at the Haverhill YMCA. Albert was a member of the United States Navy and was honorary discharged after serving during the Korean Conflict. Al was an avid HAM radio operator and a licensed aviator. He worked for many years at the Raytheon Company at various locations and was currently working for the Mass Trial Courts in Middlesex County for over 20 years in the Probate and Family Court Division. The Middlesex Bar Association recently honored him for his dedicated service.

Robert, Jr. of Concord, MA, and Jason Knox of Redding, CA., nine grandchildren, Ethan, Jared, Avery, Alden, John, Campbell, Parker, Lila and Catherine, five sisters, Alice Bevelaqua of Groveland, Eleanor Wilson of Haverhill, Evelyn Kelly of Oneonta, NY, Audrey Parker of Apollo Beach, FL and Rosalind Buxton of Derry, NH, and many nieces and nephews. He was pre- deceased by his parents, Arthur R. and Helen E. (Knox) Parker, and seven siblings.

Raymond Lucien Poirier was born on April 1, 1933, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to John N. Poirier and Anna Goulet Poirier. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. On February 5, 1961, he married Bernice Young in Salem, New Hampshire. He has lived in Katy since September of 1976, formerly of Plaistow, NH.
