Thelma L. Spaulding, 80

HAVERHILL — Thelma L. (Berry) Spaulding, 80, of Haverhill, died Monday, April 7, 2008 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Haverhill, she was the daughter of the late Norman H. and Helen L. (Tyning) Berry and lived here all of her life. She attended Haverhill public schools and was a 1945 graduate of Haverhill High School. Deciding on a career in cosmetology, she furthered her education at the Fazio Beauty Academy in Lawrence. Upon completion of her training, she went on to teach her trade at the academy for over 20 years. She owned and operated a salon in her home while raising her two young boys.

Mrs. Spaulding was widowed at a young age as her husband, Ernest C. Spaulding, died on duty while serving in the Navy on a ship off the Greenland Coast in 1960. He was a World War II and Korean War veteran. She was a devoted mother and later, a loving grandmother, committed to raising, supporting, and taking care of her beloved family. She enjoyed crafts, especially crochet, and she was a member of the "crafty ladies."

She leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey C. and Kimberley M. Spaulding, and Gregory P. and Patricia A. Spaulding, all of Haverhill, two cherished grandchildren, Gregory P. II, and Angela M. Spaulding, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Norma Bracci.

ARRANGEMENTS: Family and friends are respectfully invited to call on Thursday at the Kevin B. Comeau Funeral Home, 486 Main St. (Route 125), Haverhill, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Susan Ellery officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Salem Street, Bradford. Memorial donations may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, Floor 6, Brookline, MA 02445-9924.

    Haverhill — Hazel M. (Lothrop) Chase, 97, of Haverhill passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Penacook Place in Haverhill. She was born in Haverhill on Aug. 27, 1914, daughter of the late Horace W. and Lillian M. (Ward) Lothrop. She was employed at the former Hoyt & Worthen Tannery in Bradford. Hazel was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the White Shrine in Haverhill. Hazel enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She was the wife of the late Harold F. Chase and is survived by her sons Sterling A. Hammer of Camp Verde, AZ and William D. Hammer and his wife Carolanne of Bradford, step-son Harold W. Chase and his wife Gail of Windsor, CT, grandchildren Eric Hammer, Sterling Hammer, Jr., Lynn Fyfe, William D. Hammer, Jr., Laurel Chase, Karen Koch, Courtney Peterson, great grandchildren Liam and Brenna Fyfe and Shelby Koch, as well as several nieces and nephews.

    Haverhill — Jean J. Karambelas, 64, of Boston and formerly of Haverhill, died unexpectedly Friday night, May 18, at Tufts Medical Center, Boston. She was born in Haverhill, July 4, 1947 daughter of Connie (Terzis) Karambelas and the late George Karambelas. She was educated in the Haverhill school system, Fisher Junior College and Northeastern University. She worked as a Systems Analyst for Bank of Boston and John Hancock where she retired from in 1997. Jean was a resident in Boston’s where she served on the Board of Directors of her apartment building and was a member of the Back Bay Association. She studied piano, was an avid reader and enjoyed international travel.

    Robert Fowler passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012. Born in Haverhill, MA. He was the son of Rosemarie Bowe of FL. and the late Robert E. Fowler Sr. of MA. He was a graduate of Haverhill Trade School class of 1969. He also earned his associates degree in HVAC at NHTC. He's survived by his wife, Janice (Lajoie) Fowler of NH. and his children Jessica Fowler of FL., Robert E. Fowler III of MA., and Joshua Fowler of NH. He's also survived by his brothers Thomas Fowler of FL, James Fowler of ME. and sisters Donna Fowler of MA., Bonnie (Fowler) Lajoie and husband Donald Lajoie of FL. He was a devoted grandfather to his 7 grandchildren. He also had 7 sister-in-laws and 8 brother-in-laws. There are several nieces, nephews, and cousins too.

    Annmarie Gillis, 49, of Haverhill, died suddenly May 4, 2012 at her home. A dear daughter of Alex and Linda Gillis of Brockton, she graduated from Brockton High School in 1980 and from Northern Essex Community College. She worked in the food and beverage industry for many years including Rockingham Park in Salem NH and recently at Andover Country Club. She loved decorating, gardening, fashion and world traveling; she had many fun-filled vacations all over with family and friends. Annmarie was a very kind and generous person who helped many with her love and support; she will be sadly missed by all her friends and especially by her family who loved her very much. She was the beloved sister of Catherine Powers and her husband Michael of Brookfield CT, Donna Wolfe and her husband William of Bridgewater, Michael Gillis of Bridgewater and David Gillis of Orlando FL; and loving auntie of Michael and Andrew Gillis of Bridgewater.

He was educated in Haverhill schools. He was a World War II Army veteran. He was a technician at AT & T, retiring in 1980. He was a member of All Saints Parish, and Pioneers of AT & T. He was the husband of the late Jennie (Gorka) Oberti. He is survived by a daughter Janice Oberti of Haverhill. A sister Clementina "Tina" LaCarubba of Haverhill, and several nieces and nephews.

    She was the wife of the late Anthony C. Manchini who died Feb. 12, 2012 and is survived by her three daughters Linda and her husband Frank Motta of Bradford, Mary Ann and her husband Nelson McCormack of Groton and Susan Mary Smith-Davis of Rochester, NH, her son Anthony M. “Butch” Manchini and his wife Anastasia of No. Andover, two brothers John Fachini of North Adams and James Fachini and his wife Lois of Florida, four sisters Elizabeth Lenteni and Edith Maynard both of North Adams, Diane and her husband Carl Vattes of Manchester, NH and Irene and her husband Carl Schroeder of Methuen, five grandchildren, William Manchini, Atty. Steven Manchini, Jennifer Sommers, and Stephanie and Alexis Motta, and eight great grandchildren.

  • Salvatore (Sam) Palermo, 84

    Salvatore A. (Sam) Palermo died peacefully in Fort Myers, Florida on January 3, 2012 after a brief illness. Son of Ignazio and Lucy Palermo, Sam was born in Haverhill on March 3, 1927. Sam was a proud graduate of Haverhill Trade School and entertained at many family gatherings by singing the Haverhill Trade School school song. After graduation, Sam obtained his electrician’s license and later joined his father in the family fuel business, Haverhill Charcoal, eventually taking over and turning it into Palermo Fuel & Oil Company, which later evolved into Ronnie’s Oil. Sam worked closely with his eldest son, Stephen Palermo, who eventually took over the family business until his death in 2000 .

    Mr Albert F. Moses 81, passed away Friday April 20th 2012 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers, Ma following a brief illness. Born in Newburyport, Ma to the late Albert F. Moses Sr and Gladys (Mayes) Moses Manuel. He was raised in the Salem, Ma and was educated in the Salem School System. He was an outstanding athlete excelling in football and was a longtime fixture at the Haverhill YMCA. Albert was a member of the United States Navy and was honorary discharged after serving during the Korean Conflict. Al was an avid HAM radio operator and a licensed aviator. He worked for many years at the Raytheon Company at various locations and was currently working for the Mass Trial Courts in Middlesex County for over 20 years in the Probate and Family Court Division. The Middlesex Bar Association recently honored him for his dedicated service.

    Raymond Lucien Poirier was born on April 1, 1933, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, to John N. Poirier and Anna Goulet Poirier. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. On February 5, 1961, he married Bernice Young in Salem, New Hampshire. He has lived in Katy since September of 1976, formerly of Plaistow, NH.
