Mary V. (Hoyt) Coder, age 92, of Durham, formerly of Groveland, MA and North Hampton, NH, died peacefully, Tuesday evening, January 31, 2012 at Emeritus at Spruce Wood in Durham. She was the beloved wife of 70 years of Frederick T. Coder.
Daughter of the late Fred W. and Ida (Powell) Hoyt, she was born in Jacksonville, Florida on March 16, 1919 and was a graduate of Laconia High School, graduating with the distinguished honor of "First In Class" with the class of 1937. She continued her education, graduating from Simmons College in Boston in 1941, where her love of music lead her to become the leader of the Simmons' College Glee Club for several years.
In August, 1941, Mary married Frederick T. Coder and moved to Groveland, MA, where they raised their three children. After her children were in school, Mary became a teacher at Pentucket Regional High School. After her retirement, Mary and Fred moved to North Hampton, NH where they resided until three years ago when they settled in the Emeritus at Spruce Wood retirement community.
Mary had been a member of the Groveland Congregational Church, the First Congregational Church of Haverhill and the United Church of Christ in North Hampton. In addition to her husband, Fred, she is survived by three children, Richard F. Coder and wife Jane V. of Durham, NH; Donald H. Coder and wife Dara of Basalt, CO and Sally C. Gates and husband Melvin of Bluffton, SC; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many dear friends.
