Janice Davies, 98

Sandwich — Janice (Robinson) Davies of Sandwich, age 98, loving wife of the late Alfred E. Davies for 56 years, passed away Tuesday, September 11, at McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, following complications from a recent stroke.

Born and raised in Haverhill, Mrs. Davies was the daughter of the late Arthur R. and Beatrice (Reynolds) Robinson and older sister of the late Natalie R. Thompson of Canton and Dennis. She lived for many years in both Bradford and Greenfield, before retiring to Sandwich, where she and her family lived for 40 years.

Mrs. Davies devoted her younger years to caring for her family and home. She was an active member of the First Church of Christ in Sandwich and participated in other local organizations, including the Woman's Club, Church Circle, Glass Museum and the Friday Club Women's Lunch Group. She taught Sunday Church School in Greenfield, took oil painting classes there and enjoyed painting scenery. She was an avid reader, enjoyed flowers, cut flower arranging, and watching wildlife in nature.

Mrs. Davies is survived by her eldest daughter, Meredith Davies Newbold (husband Stephen) of South Hamilton and her devoted, only son, Malcolm, of Sandwich. She was predeceased by her younger daughter, Deborah Davies Nay of Concord, Calif., and is survived by her son-in-law Everett Nay of California and three grandchildren, Jennifer Nay Pfaff and Jeremy Davies Nay of Oregon and Elisa Nay Moore of California. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren of California, one niece of Australia and several nieces and nephews by marriage.

ARRANGEMENTS: There are no visiting hours. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service to be conducted by Rev. Anne Cubbage at the First Church of Christ, Main St., Sandwich. On Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in Janice's memory to First Church of Christ Memorial Fund, BOX 810, Sandwich, MA 02563, or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.

    North Andover — Dorothy (Close) Hacker, 92, of North Andover, passed away Saturday June 8, 2013, at The Meadows at Edgewood in North Andover. The daughter of the late Louis and Esther Close, she was born and educated in Lawrence, graduating from Lawrence High School. For over 25 years she was employed at the former Kolsky Jewelers in Lawrence. She was also the owner and operator of “Pretty Hats” card service. Dorothy was a member of Temple Emanuel in Andover for over 60 years and active in Hadassah and Sisterhood at the Temple. She is survived by her son, Elliot Hacker and his wife, Barbara, of Andover; daughter, Marjorie and her husband, Edward Gardner, of Danvers; three grandchildren, Eric Gardner, Lauren Roth and her husband, Scott, and Julie Fleming and her husband, Edward; three great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Atty. Abraham Hacker; her brothers, Henry and Charles Close and her sister, Rosalind Miller.

    Lexington, MA — Jason S. Cohen, passed away on June 3, after a brief illness. Formerly of Haverhill and Andover, Jason divided his last years between Lexington and Cape Cod. For 64 years the beloved husband of Sydelle S. (Singer). Devoted father of Susan Cohen of Natick, Nancy Cohen of Lenox, and David Cohen of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and proud grandfather of seven. After graduating from Boston Latin School and the University of Massachusetts, Jason served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and received his J.D. from B.U. Law School. He practiced as an attorney in Haverhill for more than 40 years, and acted as counsel and performed public service for many institutions, including Bradford College and the Pentucket Savings Bank.
