Congratulations to Rep. L'Italien
To the editor:
I would like to extend congratulations to Rep. Barbara L'Italien, who won last Tuesday's election for the 18th Essex House seat. She has demonstrated a commitment to the environment that reflects her constituents' values: from expanding public transportation to protecting open space to encouraging new renewable energy development.
Furthermore, Rep. L'Italien received a score of 94 percent in Massachusetts League of Environmental Voters' 2008 Environmental Scorecard.
The environment has become a key issue for many voters as high energy prices are squeezing consumer budgets this fall. The Legislature has much work ahead of it to ensure that financial troubles don't gut our future and that we work to lower our energy costs by using more alternative energy.
We look forward to continuing to work with Barbara L'Italien on these critical challenges for the commonwealth.

Learn about the life of a priest
To the editor:
In this day and age, many Catholics and other interested people wonder, "What is it like to be a priest?"
Priests are people too. Obvious, you say, but sometimes we tend to forget this. They, and their roles in our society and our lives, are often taken for granted. But what is it like to live this "different" life?
Catholics (and other interested people) in the area will have an excellent opportunity to hear what it is like to be a Catholic priest at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, at St. Rose of Lima parish hall in Topsfield.
Four well-respected priests will share their feelings with us, participate in a discussion of relevant topics and answer some questions people may have. The participating priests are:
The Rev. Wallace Blackwood, pastor, Sacred Heart parish (Manchester) and St. John the Baptist parish (Essex)
The Rev. Msgr. Paul Garrity, pastor, St. Mary's parish (Lynn)
The Rev. Mark Mahoney, pastor, St. Rose of Lima parish (Topsfield)
The Rev. Marc Piche, pastor, Immaculate Conception parish (Newburyport), formerly of Sacred Hearts Church in Bradford.
The evening is sponsored by Voice of the Faithful, North Shore-Seacoast affiliate. It will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the St. Rose of Lima parish hall. All are invited. Refreshments will be served. For information, call either Jolene Guerra 978-887-3412, or Mo Donovan, 978-465-0620.
