Our view: City built it, and here they come

'If you build it, they will come.'
Voice from the cornfield in the film "Field of Dreams"
City built it, and here they come
The boardwalk behind The Tap restaurant was completed too late last summer to be much of a draw for warm-weather activities, but plans already are in the works for a summer festival series that will center on the new riverfront attraction.

TeamWork: RiverFest and recycling top Team Haverhill's project list

Team Haverhill adopted plans this month to realize key community dreams in 2010, ranging from a brand new river festival to a long-sought expansion of curbside recycling across the whole city.
RiverFest: Starting this year, a robust series of summer events and mdash;including familiar celebrations like KidsFest and the River Run Boat Races and mdash;will be promoted under the title, "Haverhill's RiverFest." The centerpiece of the RiverFest Series will be a brand new event called "River Ruckus," tentatively scheduled for August 14 this year. With activities located near the newest section of boardwalk behind The Tap restaurant, and extended along Washington and Wingate Streets, planners for River Ruckus are considering such components as a classic car show, an art show, varied street entertainment, and a lighted boat parade or laser light show over the river in the evening. Planning Committee Chairs are Warren Gerety and Leota Sarrette, and the next meeting is scheduled for March 22, 6:30 pm, at the Pentucket Bank community room.

Poor Tom's Almanac: It pays to know the right people in the right places

I am not a person of affluence, much less influence. But I do know important people in strategic places, which makes me grateful whenever I need a favor.
I've called upon my share of contacts to secure good seats at a theater, sporting event, even a choice restaurant. Consequently, people have also called me for accommodations.

End the confusion, elect new congressman
To the editor:
This past Saturday, I attended a "Congress on the Corner" session held by Congresswoman Niki Tsongas.
The venue was the Billerica Public Library and it was a bit unusual.

Our view: Special-ed programs don't belong at Bartlett School

School Committee member Joe Bevilaqua should be commended for offering suggestions for cutting costs, and encouraged to continue to look for ways to trim the school department's budget.
But we urge Bevilaqua and his School Committee colleagues to abandon any further suggestion of moving the city's special education programs into the Bartlett School.

Art Veasey: Capt. James Brickett and the Minutemen of Haverhill

At the beginning of the second half of the 18th century, Haverhill was a town of some distinction, the result of its commerce, industry and diligent citizens. Merchants prospered while ships transported goods to and from the wharves along the banks of the Merrimack River. America was, however, beginning to experience growing pains. The inhabitants of Haverhill, like those of other settlements, resented the duties and taxes that England was imposing on the colonies to replenish its own Treasury that was depleted by the war with France.

Hold city leaders to standards of conduct
To the editor:
Historically, I had mixed feelings and thoughts on the benefits or harms of labor unions.
No doubt, they have influenced the way labor is today both in the private and public sectors. Some influences were negative, some positive.

Poor Tom's Almanac: Kazarosian set the bar high, but reached even higher

Paul Kazarosian was a man of many words: Family. Fairness. Loyalty. Humility. Integrity.
He was an attorney; a storyteller; a husband, father and grandfather; a host; a mentor and a friend.
His death on Feb. 5 at the age of 86 closed the book on a law career that spanned 53 years' membership in the Massachusetts Bar.

The Mayor's Corner: Working together, we'll get through tough budget year

This year, every city in the country faces a tough budget time. Haverhill is no exception. Our expenses are going up and mdash; and our receipts are going down.
Our goal is to hold down the cost of government and to not ask residents to pay more taxes through an override or debt exclusion.

Our view: Holdout city workers should think of taxpayers

One can commiserate with city workers who have gone more than two years without a contract and who are being asked to give more money from their paychecks to cover health insurance costs.
No one wants to give away part of their income, especially these days.
