Letters to the editor: Thanks for helping cleanup the cemetery

Thanks for helping clean up cemetery

To the editor:

I would like to comment on the condition of the Hilldale Cemetery on Hilldale Avenue. After first viewing the condition of the cemetery about a year ago, I was appalled and disgusted that a cemetery could reach the level of neglect and ruin as was evident at that time. As a Civil War re-enactor, I was even more affected by the condition of the cemetery after learning there were about 300+ Civil War veteran graves located there. Just recently, I visited the cemetery with Thomas Spitalere, and found conditions there greatly improved. I understand that recently, Allen Construction has been voluntarily working at the cemetery daily and the results speak for themselves. The dignity and respect that this sacred ground deserves is now slowly returning with the work being done there. Mr. Spitalere and Allen Construction deserve the highest praise for their diligence and hard work, especially with Memorial Day fast approaching.
