Sports clips: Maloney pitches a four-hitter first game

Junior Jeff Maloney of Haverhill pitched a four-hitter in the first game, striking out eight, as UMass Lowell swept Dowling College 8-4, 4-0 in a baseball doubleheader on Saturday, March 15. The River Hawks improved to 3-7 on the season.

Haverhill alumna stands out at track meet

Chrissy Carifio, tri-captain of the Holy Cross women's indoor track team, led her team to a sixth-place finish at the Patriot League Championships, held at Bucknell University over the weekend of Feb. 22. Carifio, a senior at Holy Cross and a former Haverhill High School standout, ran the first leg of the 4x800 meter relay, a finish that qualified for the ECAC meet with a time of nine minutes, 24.8 seconds. Carifio also finished 12th in the individual 800 meter race with a time of 2:23.

Haverhill pitchers star

Haverhill's Pat Shanahan worked 12/3 innings to earn a save for Fisher College as they downed William Woods University of Missouri 9-8 on Sunday, March 16.

Haverhill's Rob Mondello was the star on the mound and in the batter's box as Fisher swept Fitchburg State on Sunday, March 9, in a doubleheader. In the first game, the sophomore slapped a pair of singles in a 13-1 win. He followed that up in the second game, tossing three innings for a save in an 8-3 win.

Also on the roster is Jesse Avalos of Haverhill and Thomas Englehardt of Bradford.

Adrian Gonzales, a Central Catholic senior, was named one of the Division 1 2008 Players of the Year.

Bill Marsden, a junior; Wilfredo Pagan, a senior, and Carson Desrosiers, a sophomore, all from Central Catholic, were named to the 2008 Merrimac Valley Conference Boys All Conference Team.

Junior Charles Roche and senior Ismael Rios, both of Haverhill High, and senior Kabia Oshodi, of Central Catholic, were named Division 1 2008 MVC Boys All Stars.

Central Catholic's Rick Nault was named the Division 1 2008 MVC Boys Coach of the Year.

Girls division

Central Catholic senior Jackie Vienneau and sophomore Katie Zenevitch were named to the 2008 MVC Girls Conference Team.

Braveheart Wrestling Club

The Braveheart Wrestling Club begins its season March 26 and will hold sessions Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m., March 26 to June 25, at Greater Lawrence Tech, 57 River Road in Andover. The club will feature techniques in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman with instruction, drilling, live wrestling and dual meets and tournaments with other clubs. Soccer officials rules clinic

Basketball camp

The fourth annual Matt Bonner basketball camp will take place at the SportsZone in Derry, N.H., from July 7-11. The camp is open to girls and boys from ages 8-16. Haverhill High has an opening for a head boys basketball coach as well as for a freshman and JV field hockey coach for the 2008-09 school year. The basketball job pays $5,500-$7000 depending on experience and the field hockey positions pay in the $2,000-$3,000 range depending on experience. Volunteers needed for Run of the Charles

The 26th annual Run of the Charles Canoe and Kayak Race needs volunteers Sunday, April 27, to help 1,500 paddlers. Tasks include check-in/registration, setup, boat number spotting, safety and cleanup. Experienced canoeists/kayakers are also needed to follow racers.
