The Merrimack Valley Umpires Association will hold umpire training classes for individuals who want to be certified as baseball umpires. The training will begin on Thursday, July 9, and continue for the next six consecutive Thursday evenings. The classes will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption School, 301 Haverhill St., Lawrence. The official Major League Baseball umpire's exam will be administered at the end of the training.
The MVUA provides umpires to all levels of baseball from college games to Babe Ruth and little leagues. Umpires have the option to work as many or as few games as they like. The average game fee earned by umpires is $60 for a typical two-hour game.
The cost for the seven-week program is $125. The training is open to individuals ages 16 and over. For more information, call John Silva at 978-462-4599, Ron Annand at 978-681-8927 or visit www.mvua.org.
