Post 4 loses heartbreaker in district tournament
Haverhill Legion Post 4 baseball dropped at heartbreaker to Natick, 6-5, in 10 innings, to drop out of the district tournament at Sudbury.
Joel Sullivan (4 for 6) and Brendon Bretton (3 for 3, two runs scored) scored in the first and second to give Post 4 an early 2-0 lead. But three Haverhill errors in the sixth inning helped Natick to establish at 4-2 lead.
Josh Chasse (2 for 2) blasted an eighth-inning solo home run to draw Haverhill within one at 4-3. Bretton's RBI double scored Chad Kimball to tie the game and Bill Lafferty (2 for 5, two RBIs) ripped his second two-strike, two-out RBI single of the game to give Haverhill a 5-4 lead. But a home run tired the game in the eighth and the fourth error of the game in the 10th proved costly.
Starting pitcher Taylor Robinson pitched five innings, yielding two runs on four hits, walking one and striking out two. Austin Brodie, who pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth, tossed three innings of effective relief before yielding the game tying home run in the eighth.
Haverhill ends its season at 10-8.

Local women flock to over-30 league
Carolyn Peters of Haverhill reaches up to catch a line-drive and makes it look easy during a softball game in the Dirt The Skirt league for women over 30. The league plays at the Pines Recreation Area in Groveland.

It is with this thought in mind that Dirt the Skirt, a softball league for women over 30, was founded last year.
"Once you hit 30, the body begins to sort of break down," says Christine Sullivan Higgins of Haverhill, president and founder of DTS, who adds that several similar leagues in the area allow players under 30 to play. "It's a different game when you're not 30 or over. We want to give women the opportunity to play against an equivalent peer group." -
