Hillie wrestlers had another outstanding week.
It started Wednesday when they handled Andover easily with a 57-12 Merrimack Valley Conference victory. They followed that up with a win over Bellingham and a loss to Westford Academy on Friday to move to 14-6 on the season. Haverhill will host a major dual meet tournament on Saturday. Acton-Boxboro, Chicopee, Everett, Leominster, Malden Catholic, Methuen and Westford Academy will participate. The event starts at 10 a.m.
Girls hockey team ties twice
The girls hockey team had a pair of ties last week.
The Hillies skated to a 4-4 draw with Wayland on Wednesday and then tied Concord-Carlisle 1-1 on Saturday. They will host Methuen on Saturday and travel to Newton South on Wednesday.
The boys squad suffered a 3-1 loss at Lincoln-Sudbury to drop one game under the .500 mark. The Hillies are now 5-6-2 heading into final eight games of the year. They will host North Andover on Feb. 12 in their final home game of the year.
Swim and dive team finishes third
Haverhill was proud to host the 2014 MVC Boys Swim & Dive Championship on Friday afternoon.
The Hillies had a strong showing, finishing third overall in the competition. Sam Clough won the individual diving title and Matt Amedeo won the 100-yard butterfly for the Hillies. Chelmsford won the MVC team title.
Gilmore is top Hillie finisher
Riley Gilmore was once again the top Haverhill finisher at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Sunday.
The senior placed second in the mile run in a field of 56 runners. Samantha Wise and Molly Thomas finished sixth and 13th respectively in the 600-meter dash. Cameron Simes was 10th in the 1,000 meters and Bryam Discua was 16th in the 300-meter dash. Both teams will compete in the 2014 MVC Championship Meet at the Reggie Lewis Center on Friday.
Ski teams suffer defeat
The girls ski team fell to North Andover and Andover last week, while the boys team was defeated by Masconomet. Both teams will compete in the big Interscholastic Race this Tuesday afternoon at Ski Bradford.
Boys basketball team to host Billerica
The boys basketball team made a comeback in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime, but came out on the losing end of an 86-78 decision at Chelmsford.
The Hillies will host Billerica on Friday night. The girls team jumped out to a 12-10 first quarter lead on Friday night, but ended up falling 59-32 to Lowell. The Hillies will be home on Monday night against Dracut.
