Five Haverhill High students competed with the best in the nation last week. Patrick Garvey, Phil Sasso-Flanagan, Ronsard Masamba, Alex Mahew and Mike McNaughton qualified for the 2012 New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The five student-athletes teamed up in two different relay events, and finished in fifth place in each. In the Emerging Elite Division, the sprint medley relay team of Garvey, Sasso-Flanagan, Masamba and McNaughton finished fifth with a time of 3:39.47, about a half-second faster than they ran in April.
The 4 x 100 relay team of the same boys ran 43.64, in the trials and came back to run 43.51 in the finals. Both were improvements from their previous best of 43.76 at the MIAA State Meet.
