Two Haverhill wrestlers are going to the state finals. Freshman Orlando Rojas and senior Parris Williams finished in the top four of their respective weight classes in the Division 1 Sectional Tournament to advance. Rojas will compete at 120 pounds and Williams at 152 pounds on Friday in the MIAA Division 1 State Tournament at Weymouth High School. The Hillies concluded the regular season with a 42-41 victory over Acton-Boxborough last Wednesday.
The girls' basketball teams picked up a pair of close wins last week, edging Lawrence 51-49 and Notre Dame 43-34. The Hillies will play their final home game of the season on Feb. 16 against Mt. Alvernia, before gearing up for the playoffs. The boys' basketball team will close out the season with three home games next week. They will host Reading (Feb. 12), Lowell (Feb. 14) and Methuen (Feb. 17).
The boys' swim team finished fourth in the 2012 Merrimack Valley Conference Championship Meet held at Haverhill on Friday. Several Hillies will represent Haverhill at the Division 1 Sectionals on Sunday, including George Bonner, Connor Cronin, Sean Driscoll, Liam Frieswick, Tyler Hanides, Noah Hunt, Max Hoffman, Panupak Kraiwong, Cameron Limoli, Hanul Moon, James Murray and Nicholas Roy.
Molly Hoopes and Kristy Robertson were selected to represent Haverhill High School at the 2012 MIAA Girls & Women in Sport Celebration. U.S. Soccer gold medalist Kristine Lilly was the keynote speaker at the event, which was held at Faneuil Hall on Friday. Each school in the state sent two female representatives to the event.
Senior Blaine Joia was selected to participate in the prestigious Shriners All-Star football game. The game will be played on June 15 at Gillette Stadium. In other football news, senior Will Haskell has committed to play football at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., next year. Trinity competes in the NESCAC.
