Miller paces runners at Yankee Homecoming
Ryan Miller led Haverhill runners at the annual Yankee Homecoming 10-mile Race in Newburyport. Miller, a member of the Haverhill-based SISU Project and Fitchburg State graduate, placed 11th among 1,279 finishers. He clocked 54:10, averaging 5:25 per mile. Alene Reta of New York captured the race in 50:49.
Matt Germain, a former Haverhill High School track and cross-country standout, finished 16th in 55:13. Like Miller, Germain represents the SISU Project and is a Fitchburg State graduate.
Kelly Lecours (205th place) was the city's top female finisher. She crossed the finish line beside her husband, Steve Lecours, in 72:43. Also finishing well were Paul Scovotti (68:15) in 126th and Evan George (71:59) in 183rd.
In the accompanying 5K race, Chris McCann took 18th among 1,420 finishers. McCann, a former Hillies track ace now attending Worcester Polytechnic Institute, ran 17:26 for the 3.1-mile route. He was followed by Jason Ouellete (18:41) in 42nd. Methuen's Steve Plouffe, who won last month's Sapienza Memorial Road Race at Haverhill High, took top honors in 15:26.
Black Diamonds post playoff win
The Haverhill Black Diamonds squeaked by the Haverhill Diamonds, 8-6, in the Merrimack Valley Senior Babe Ruth playoffs. Pitchers Matt Mondello and Mike Nicolosi combined for the win. Frank Xia collected two hits and Ryan Magoon knocked in a pair of runs to pace the Black Diamonds' offense.
Soccer players earn gold
City soccer players Richie Greene, Matt Standley and Mike Murach lifted the Fratella team to a soccer gold medal at the Bay State Games. The team went undefeated (5-0) in the 7-on-7 tourney.
Ford shines in hoops loss
Haverhill High School senior Mike Ford pumped in 10 points in Haverhill's 51-41 loss to North Andover in Hoops for Hope action.
Senior Baseball registration
Haverhill Senior Baseball is accepting registrations for its 12-year-old, middle school and high school teams which will be playing in the fall league run by Play Ball of Salem, N.H. Whittier Tech fall sports teams hold tryouts beginning on the following dates: football, Aug. 20, 8 a.m. in gymnasium (freshmen can try out then or wait until first day of school); soccer, Aug. 23, all grades, 1 p.m. in gymnasium; volleyball, Aug. 23, all grades, 1 p.m. in gymnasium; cross country, all grades, Aug. 29, time and site TBA; cheerleading, Aug. 29, time and site TBA.
Basketball camp registration
HoopGains, located at Cedardale Health and Fitness, is accepting registration for its Shooting Camp Aug. 20-24. Tryouts for the Haverhill Girls 14U Fall Fast Pitch Softball League will be Sunday, Aug.12 at 5 p.m. at the American Legion Field in Haverhill. Players should arrive for registration at 4:30 p.m. and bring a copy of their insurance card. The league runs Sept. 9 through Oct. 13, with double headers played on Saturdays. Local women flock to over-30 league

What the mind wants, the body sometimes can't provide. Especially as the body ages.

It is with this thought in mind that Dirt the Skirt, a softball league for women over 30, was founded last year.
"Once you hit 30, the body begins to sort of break down," says Christine Sullivan Higgins of Haverhill, president and founder of DTS, who adds that several similar leagues in the area allow players under 30 to play. "It's a different game when you're not 30 or over. We want to give women the opportunity to play against an equivalent peer group." -
Young golfers square off in Garrison Junior Tour
The Garrison Par 3 golf course on Hilldale Avenue in Haverhill is sponsoring its own Junior Tour this summer for boys and girls 8 to 14 years old.
