Nearly 200 pound pavement in Sapienza race
Dan Verrington of Haverhill was the first local finisher of the 22nd annual Sapienza Road Race, finishing the 4-mile course in 21 minutes and in fourth place.
Former Methuen track star Kevin Alliette won the race, finishing in 20:05.
Jim Johnson of Wakefield finished second.
On the women's side, Kara Haas, Caroline Bjune, and Phillips Academy graduate Melissa Donais, finished first, second, and third, respectively.
Donais, 24, is the granddaughter of legendary road runner Tony Sapienza, whom the race is named after.
Her mother, Toni, organizes the race every year.
Nearly 200 runners participated in the event, which raised $2,000 for a charity named in Sapienza's honor that awards a scholarship to a local athlete who plans to study mathematics in college.
Sapienza taught math at Haverhill High for more than 28 years.

Carolyn Peters of Haverhill reaches up to catch a line-drive and makes it look easy during a softball game in the Dirt The Skirt league for women over 30. The league plays at the Pines Recreation Area in Groveland.
What the mind wants, the body sometimes can't provide. Especially as the body ages.

It is with this thought in mind that Dirt the Skirt, a softball league for women over 30, was founded last year.
"Once you hit 30, the body begins to sort of break down," says Christine Sullivan Higgins of Haverhill, president and founder of DTS, who adds that several similar leagues in the area allow players under 30 to play. "It's a different game when you're not 30 or over. We want to give women the opportunity to play against an equivalent peer group." -

Wednesday, July 14, the sad news of the passing of the legendary Gene Goodreault reached Haverhill. He succumbed to illness at age 91 in Orinda, Calif. At that moment, it seemed the humidity became heavier and the gray sky appeared darker and more ominous. - Sports shorts
