Bradford golfer sets course record

Phil Miceli shot a course record 65, seven under par, on the first day at the Far Corner Golf Course and never looked back as he won the annual North Shore Amateur Open Golf Tournament — by eight strokes.

"He was just on fire on Day One," said Bob Flynn, director of golf for Far Corner. "It was the best score we have had in the 30 years we have hosted the tournament here in Boxford."

Seventy-three golfers began the tournament, but only 41 qualified for the final round.

Miceli had his spectacular first round despite challenging weather conditions. The day began with sunshine but quickly turned to rain and then back to sun.The wet weather slowed the greens, making Miceli's round even more impressive.

Day 2 was not as good for Miceli. He shot a solid 73, but no one came close to his first round score and he ended up winning easily.

John Gilmartin of Andover, a two-time winner of the tournament, shot a 74 and 72 for a two-day total of 146 to take second place.

While presenting the prizes, Flynn thanked everyone for their participation and congratulated all the winners on behalf of his father, golfer Bill Flynn and founder of the amateur tournament, which took place Aug. 19 and 20.
