Scoreboard: Recap of high school games, Sept. 15-22

Football

Haverhill was no match for Catholic Memorial on Friday, Sept. 19. The nonleague challenger ruined the Hillies' home opener, 28-21. All the scoring occurred in the second half. Haverhill outscored CM, 13-12, in the third quarter, but Catholic Memorial's size eventually wore the Hillies down, and they were outscored, 16-8, in the final quarter. Standouts were Noel Figuereo with two runs for touchdowns, Dan Triplett with a 72-yard running touchdown and good rushing yardage by Isiah Ocasio.

Whittier took an early 8-0 lead against Narragansett on Saturday, Sept. 20, but the Wildcats eventually lost, 27-8.

Bryan Trickett ran for 2 yards to score the early TD and the Wildcats followed it up with a 2-point play. Rushing leaders were Trickett, Carlos Candelario and Nate Buck.

Girls soccer

Freshman Meghan Gulbrandsen was clutch in goal for the Hillies on Monday, Sept. 22, preserving a 3-2 victory over Dracut, when starter Christina Gould was unable to continue after halftime. Casey Anderson scored all three of Haverhill's goals.

Haverhill beat Notre Dame, 9-2, on Thursday, Sept. 18. Casey Anderson scored three goals. Jenna Adelizzi, Molly Fitzgerald, Emma Hennessey, Shannen Styrczula, Jasmine Hussein and Samantha Krenzer scored one each.

Haverhill enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Methuen on Tuesday, Sept. 16, behind three goals by Casey Anderson.

Boys soccer

Whittier fell to Lynn Tech, 4-0, on Monday, Sept. 22, and to Minuteman Regional by a score of 3-1 on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Haverhill took advantage of goals by Ryan McLeod, Zach Greene, Will Menter and Jared Lewis in a 4-0 victory over Central Catholic on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Haverhill came up short against Dracut, 4-3, on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Girls volleyball

Whittier blanked Nashoba, 3-0, on Monday, Sept. 22. Samantha Dietrich had five kills. Kendra Hobbs had 10 assists and 15 service points with four aces. Scores were 25-16, 25-13 and 25-18. Whittier's record is now 7-1.

Whittier beat Chelsea, 3-0, on Friday, Sept. 19, behind Jordan Alper's nine kills, Hobbs' nine assists and 14 service points, and Danielle Ryan's 11 service points. Game scores were 25-11, 25-15 and 25-17.

Haverhill fell to Tewksbury, 3-0, on Friday, Sept. 19, continuing its winless streak. Good performances were turned in by Hannah Davis with eight kills and Jill Aramian with four. Beth Simpson had five assists. Scores were 16-25, 21-25 and 15-25.

Whittier suffered its only loss so far this season to Fellowship Christian on Thursday, Sept. 18, in straight games, 12-25, 13-25 and 22-25. Samantha Dietrich served eight points, Kendra Hobbs had nine assists and Danielle Ryan had five kills in the loss.

Ryan and Hobbs led their team to a victory over Mystic Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 17. Ryan tallied 12 service points in a row, finishing with a team-high 17. Hobbs scored 10 points in a row and led with six aces. Scores were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-13.

Haverhill lost to Lawrence on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 14-25, 20-25 and 21-25.

Field hockey

Haverhill beat Lawrence, 3-0, on Thursday, Sept. 18. Beth Strong, Rebecca Stabile and Jackie Pereira scored for the Hillies with assists from Kailey Burke, Callie Joseph and Tara Early. The victory is Haverhill's first of the year.

Haverhill fell to Lowell, 4-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, and 2-0 to Methuen on Monday, Sept. 15.

Golf

Haverhill dropped a match, 13-3, to Andover on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Bradford's Nick Maccario is one of the reasons that the St. John's Prep golf team is still unbeaten. Maccario shot a low round of 38 to help his team to a 283-284 win over Xaverian on Thursday, Sept. 18.

Haverhill and Dracut split their matches, 10-10, on Tuesday, Sept. 16.

Haverhill kept Lawrence from winning a match on Monday, Sept. 15, enjoying a 20-0 final score.

Girls swimming

Andover was disqualified giving Haverhill a tie on Friday, Sept. 19, against the Golden Warriors, 93-93. It was only the second time in 114 dual meets — the last was on Sept. 24, 2007 — that Andover did not win. During the 500 freestyle, an Andover swimmer on the pool deck fell into the water. According to the rules, such an occurrence disqualifies the team whose member falls in. Haverhill swimmer Nikki Mazurenko won the 50 meter freestyle. Maggie Opolski, Caroline Papachriston, Emily Opolski and Stephanie Murray won the 200 medley relay. Murray also won the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle.

Boys cross country

Whittier finished ahead of Minuteman Regional and behind Shawsheen Valley in a tri-meet on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Haverhill was victorious over Lawrence on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Girls cross country

Whittier lost to Minuteman Regional 50-15 on the road.

Haverhill varsity and junior varsity took a win over Lawrence on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at home.
