The Haverhill Youth Wrestling team had a stellar day at the Massachusetts Youth Wrestling Association North Sectional Tournament on Feb. 5, qualifying 14 wrestlers for the MYWA State Tournament at Algonquin Regional High.
That event will be Feb. 26.
In the novice division, Nick Tejada (76 pounds) and Jake Nicolosi (79 pounds) each won gold medals for their respective weight classes. Nicolosi had a big comeback in his semi-final match against Stephen Macintosh of Melrose. Down by a score of 14-0, Nicolosi scored a pin with just seconds remaining, and then went on to win gold in his final match. Also placing in the top five and qualifying for the states in the Novice Division were Sam Prescott (third place) at 84 pounds, Stephen Wise (fifth place) at 84 pounds, and Shaun Mears (fifth place) at 99 pounds.
Haverhill had two more medal winners in the middle school division, as veteran eighth graders Tom Pagliarulo (89 pounds) and Reece Millington (124 pounds) both came away with hard-earned silver medals. Also receiving medals were eighth-grade wrestlers Colby Prescott (103 pounds), Jake Prescott (107 pounds), Stefano Zarro (111 pounds), Dylan Chaffee (128 pounds), and Dan McDonald (140 pounds) who qualified for states with third-place finishes. Colton Smith (77 pounds), and Ben Torrence (185 pounds) also got fourth-place finishes and punched their tickets to the state tournament.
