The annual Haverhill City Tennis Tournament concluded play last weekend at the John J. Lynch Memorial Courts at Winnekenni Park with action in Men's singles and doubles.
Ray Reed, of Amesbury, retained both his singles and doubles titles without the loss of a set.
Reed demolished 2006 champ, Ken Paul, 6-0, 6-1.
Reed's dominance was such that he committed two unforced errors the entire match.
For Reed, this was his seventh singles title since winning his first in 1994. By winning his seventh singles title, Reed has tied Haverhill tennis legend Steve Rich for second place among most city singles crowns.
Rich, now a resident of Hilton Head Island, S.C,, dominated the '60s, winning his titles between 1960 and 1969. Plaistow's John Tracy owns the all-time record of nine singles titles, losing only one match between 1993 and 2005.
Tracy also has 10 doubles crowns with three different partners.
In his semi-final match, Reed had a slightly more difficult time with Haverhill native Justin Lupa but prevailed, 6-4, 6-3.
The hard hitting lefty Lupa pressed Reed throughout the match but Reed's counter punching style proved too consistent for Lupa to handle.
Paul, of Portsmouth, N.H., made it to the final by outlasting Haverhill's Todd Proia, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, in a grueling two-hour match in 95-degree heat.
Later that morning, a confident Reed won his fifth doubles title, his fourth with current partner Randall "Bubba" Seabrook. Reed and Seabrook defeated second seeds Todd Proia and Dave Meaney, 6-2, 6-2, for the third consecutive year in the final.
The top seeded Reed and Seabrook took control early and dominated the match from the start.
Reed and Seabrook had an easy path to the final advancing by forfeit over the father and son team of Matt and Justin Lupa.
The younger Lupa was forced to default after injuring his bicep during the latter stages of his singles match with Reed earlier in the day.
Meaney and Proia had a more formidible path to the final, saving a match point before prevailing, 3-6, 7-5 (10-4), over 2002 champs Steve Iola and Peter Lynch.
In all, 38 players entered this year; 20 in singles, which is the most since 1999.
The tournament would like to thank Vinnie Ouellette and Laura Skafas of the Recreation Department for their continued support of the tournament.
