Local young people are taking fencing lessons from Olympian Molly Sullivan Sliney, who lives in Bradford.
Sullivan Sliney teaches students the fine points of the art at a Recreation Department program at the Citizens Center.
Sullivan Sliney was a member of the 1988 and 1992 United States fencing teams. She was also a member of the 1987 and 1991 Pan American teams and won two gold medals with that group.
She started fencing at 10 years old as a way build her self esteem. Because of a learning disability, dyslexia, she lacked confidence and belief in herself. Attending the University of Notre Dame on a full scholarship, she received a bachelor’s degree in marketing while winning two NCAA titles, a mark recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Notre Dame also named her its Female Athlete of the Decade for the 1980s.
