---- — Michaela Sliney capped an outstanding season of diving on Sunday night.

The sophomore placed second in the 1-meter diving event at the MIAA Division 1 State Finals at Harvard University. Cali Aramian placed sixth in the 100-yard backstroke and teamed with Emily Brown, Mikayla Sargent and Meaghan Broderick for a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.

The 400-yard free relay team (Broderick, Brown, Aramian and Maggie Franklin) placed sixth. The 200-yard free relay team (Sliney, Franklin, Anna Pearse and Tess Tarpy) placed seventh. Haverhill finished in eighth place overall as a team.

Gilmore receives top award

After an outstanding month for the Haverhill High girls cross country team, senior Riley Gilmore was named the Merrimack Valley Female Student-Athlete of the month.

She placed 19th in the MIAA Eastern Massachusetts Championship Meet and went on to place 81st in the MIAA State Championship Finals.

Football team narrowly misses win

The football team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday night to Division 2 power Reading.

The Hillies took a 3-0 lead on a 40-yard field goal by Patrick Yale to end the first half. They then went up 9-0 on the first play of the second half — an 82 yard touchdown run by Ian Kessel.

They held a 9-6 lead and seemed poised to hold on, but Reading came back. The Rockets scored with just 14 seconds remaining to stun the Hillies. Haverhill (6-4) closes out the season with its annual Thanksgiving Day game against Lowell.
