When Haverhill Athletic Director Garin Veris returned to school on Monday after the Halloween weekend, a resignation letter from girls basketball coach Larry Snow awaited him.
Snow's single season as the Hillie girls head coach ended in an 0-19 record. After fighting to retain his job this summer, Snow led clinics and camps to try to build interest and the skill level of younger players.
Snow's successor will learn whether any of his efforts were successful. Team tryouts begin on Nov. 30.
Veris said he would like to have a new head coach in place by then, but will not rush the interview process.
"This is an important position," he said. "What we need is a leader of young women. We need someone who will be supported by the community."
Veris said his choice will be someone with a background in basketball and someone with good coaching skills.
He said a few people have already expressed interest in the job. Veris said he will post it on the city Web site and on the Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association Web site, as well.
Ideally, he said, he will have a candidate chosen within the next two weeks.
Snow, 58, indicated in his letter that he was giving up the job for health reasons, according to a report in The Eagle-Tribune.
He coached for six years in the mid-1990s through 2002, at Whittier Vo-Tech and Northern Essex Community College.
