Whittier fall banquet is Dec. 17
Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School athletes will be honored at the Fall Sports Banquet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17, in the cafeteria.
Participants in cheerleading, cross country, football, soccer and volleyball will be recognized. Jackets and awards will be presented at this time, and parents are encouraged to attend.
The Whittier Vo-Tech Boosters purchase varsity jackets with embroidery for all athletes with three years of sports participation and cover the cost for each athlete and coach to have a meal at the banquet.
Tickets are $10 per person; $5 for Whittier students and children under 10. Tickets must be purchased in advance; they will not be sold at the door. ticket deadline is Dec. 3 and tickets may be picked up on the night of the banquet. To reserve tickets, send payment to Boosters c/o Whittier Tech, 115 Amesbury Line Road, Haverhill MA 01830. Checks should be made out to Whittier Boosters.

Pizzeria hosts Hillie fundraiser
There will be a "Hillies Day" fundraiser at Romano's Pizzeria, 620 Primrose St., this Thursday, day and night, and includes dine-in, take out or delivery items. Grads play for Framingham State
Will Menter, Haverhill High Class of 2009, and Peter Maranto, Haverhill High Class of 2008, are playing soccer for the Framingham State Rams this season.
Menter, a business management major, plays defense.
Maranto, a business major, plays midfield.
Boys and Girls Club leagues
The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Haverhill is holding registrations for its in-house basketball and floor hockey leagues from now until Nov. 21.
The cost is $15 for each player, which includes 10 weeks of play, playoffs, a jersey and awards. Players must be club member to play; club registration is $30.
Games will begin the first week in December.
In basketball, fourth through sixth graders play on Saturday mornings, seventh through eighth graders play on Thursday nights, and high school students play Monday nights.
In floor hockey, first through third graders play on Friday nights while fourth and fifth graders play Wednesday nights.

Haverhill Rec Department sports offered
Lacrosse, fencing, soccer and wrestling are all available through the Haverhill Recreation Department's Fall/Winter Programming. The sports are for all members of the family.
Residents can register four ways. First, you may visit the city of Haverhill Web site at www.ci.haverhill.ma.us and click departments, then click Parks and Recreation. Pay by debit card or credit card. Paying by this menthod guarantees enrollment in any available program and slot.
A registration form can be downloaded from the Web site, filled out and mailed with a check to Haverhill Recreation Department, 10 Welcome St., Haverhill, MA 01830.
Registration may be done in person at the Recreation Department office at the Citizens Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Parents may phone the Recreation Department at 978-374-2388 ext. 33, 10 or 29, to have a form mailed.
Programs are:
Lacrosse: For boys and girls in grades 3 and 4, 5 and 6, and 7 and 8, the lacrosse league is a recreational league with the emphasis on playing the sport and fundamentals. The league will compete in the Mass. Bay Youth Lacrosse League beginning in April. In order to prepare for the April season, all players will practice at the Bradford Elementary School on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings beginning Jan. 5. Registrations are being accepted for league play with practice sessions or for league only. Registration deadline is Dec. 15. Cost is $125 for the league only and $150 for practice session and league. Third and fourth grades play 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; fifth and sixth grades play 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and seventh and eighth grades play 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Fencing: Under the direction of two-time Olympian Molly Sullivan-Sliney, this eight-week program is designed for kids and adults to learn the basics of this fast-growing sport. Classes meet on Thursdays from Dec. 3 through Feb. 4. Classes do not meet during Christmas break. Beginner class will meet from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and intermediate class will meet from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. All equipment is provided. Cost is $85.
Soccer: The Haverhill Recreation department has partnered with New England's leader in Soccer Coaching, PLAY SOCCER. This six-week program curriculum will consist of dribbling, passing, turning, goalkeeping, goal scoring and much more. Session 1 runs Jan. 6 through Feb. 10. Session 2 runs March 10 through April 14. The games will be played at Pentucket Lake School on Wednesday Evenings. Cost is $60 per session. There are two age groups. Soccer tots, for ages 4 to 6, is a noncompetitive introduction to soccer. Participants will learn to interact with one another and hopefully will encourage them to play again and again. Play is from 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Soccer Juniors, for ages 7 to 9, is designed to help improve the skills of both boys & girls in a safe, fun and educational environment. PLAY SOCCER will help develop their skills through a series of games, drills and scrimmages. Play is from 6:50 p.m. to 7:50 p.m.
Wrestling: Fifth- through eighth-grade only, under the direction of Mickey Lawler. This program teaches the fundamentals and techniques taught in amateur wrestling with participants competing in various tournaments. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday, Nov. 17, through the end of March at the Consentino School from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cost is $45.
Girls basketball tryout scheduled
The New England Shooting Stars Girls AAU Basketball Club's tryouts for 15- and 16-year-old teams. Tryouts will be at the SportsZone, 7 A St. in Derry, N.H., on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Bradford Ski Team seeks members
The Bradford Ski Team has opened registration for the 2009-2010 season. The youth alpine race team competes in the Eastern Mass Buddy Werner League.
The race program is open to children of all ages through high school age who can ski. No racing experience is necessary. The team's coaching staff will teach fundamental skills.
Practices are weeknights at Ski Bradford. The season starts at the sight of first snowfall in mid- to late December, and racing runs January through March on Sunday mornings. Registration is online through Nov. 30. Visit www.bradfordskiteam.com.

Youth football seeks players, coaches

Elite basketball club seeks players
The Mass. Elite Basketball Club is accepting player registrations for the fall travel team sessions. This program is geared toward youth entering seventh- through ninth grades.
Beginning in August, players will participate in a 10-game league schedule, compete in three regional tournaments, participate in weekly practice sessions and participate in a league playoff tournament.
Fees for the fall session have been placed at $325. Academic scholarships are available for student-athletes who compiled a 3.5 GPA or higher during their last full school year.

The New England Hawks are recruiting players for their fall season, now in its third week.
Although the season has already begun, the Hawks welcome recruits at any time.

Swim, diving lessons given at HHS pool
Haverhill High School's pool will be open for diving lessons for ages 8 and up on Sundays from 6 to 8 p.m.
Cost is $5 per hour.
Family Swim Time (must be age 3 or older) is offered Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m.

North Shore United Soccer Club will operate the Topsfield Fairground Indoor Soccer Center starting in October.
