Hillies finish off stellar week

Over a four-day span last week, Hillies varsity sports teams combined for a 6-1-1 record. The two cross country teams also had great performances over the weekend to contribute to a great run by our Hillie student-athletes.

The girls soccer team picked up back-to-back wins last week, defeating Chelmsford and Tewksbury to improve to 3-2-1. The boys’ team finished the week with consecutive ties. The Hillies played to a 2-2 tie with Tewksbury and a 0-0 tie with Central Catholic.

The Hillie golf team remained unbeaten in league play with a convincing win over Andover last Friday. The Hillies improved to 4-1-1 overall. The girls volleyball team also has just one loss on the year. The Hillies defeated Tewksbury to improve to 3-1 heading into a three-match week.

The football team rebounded in impressive fashion on Friday night. The Hillies pounded Peabody 41-14 on the road to improve to 2-1. This is the second 40+ point performance this season by the Hillies, who hadn’t scored over 40 points in a game since 2004. Haverhill is on the road again this Friday night, travelling to Somerville for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

The cross country teams travelled to Holyoke for the 2012 Amherst Invitational on Saturday morning. Jackie Solimine and Riley Gilmore placed fifth and eighth respectively out of a field of 143 runners from across the state. The girls team placed seventh out of 22 teams. On the boys side, Christian White placed 18th out of 154 runners to lead the Hillies.

After an opening the season with a loss, the Hillie girls swim team has reeled off two straight wins. They downed North Andover 88-76 on Friday afternoon. The next home meet for the Hillies is slated for Friday, Sept. 28, vs. Dracut. The field hockey team snagged its second victory of the year with a 3-1 win over Dracut. The Hillies have already equaled their win total from a year ago. They return home on Oct. 3 to take on Lowell.
