Golf for a good cause: Benefit tournaments include Gazette Santa hole-in-one

Gazette Santa tourney starts Sept. 29

Murphy's Garrison Golf Center will host its 41st consecutive Gazette Santa Hole-in-One contest on Wednesday, Sept. 29, through Saturday, Oct. 2, at the driving range at 654 Hilldale Ave.

Owners Ted and Mary Murphy close the driving range to collect each year for the Gazette Santa Fund, which provides meals and gifts at the holidays with the help of Community Action and the Salvation Army.

Golfers buy a bucket of balls for $8 and try to land closest to the pin or score a hole-in-one to win prizes donated by local businesses and individuals.

One hundred percent of the proceeds go to the Gazette Santa Fund.

This year, the contest has been moved up by two weeks in the hope that regular golfers will still have their clubs at the ready, and that more casual players will be lured out by what organizers hope will be better weather than is usually found later in the month.

Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 29 through Oct. 1, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2.

To find out how to donate a prize, contact Mary Murphy at Garrison or Gazette Editor Donna Capodelupo at 978-556-8528.
