The Pentucket Kiwanis Club of Haverhill hosted its annual Soap Box Derby race on Saturday, with a strong showing by the girls of Sacred Hearts School.
Katie Hailson, 12, of Sacred Hearts School and sponsored by Chewy Tubes of Maine, chewed out the competition by coming in first place
Sacred Hearts had another winning presence at the race with the second place finisher Christina Cokely, 12, who was sponsored by the Exchange Club of Haverhill
In third place, Hill View Montessori School upper elementary student Colton Smith, 10, sponsored by Regan Ford of Haverhill, was the only male winner of the day.
Twenty-five cars driven by students ranging in age from 8 to 13 took part. The derby raises about $5,000 each year for local charities.
The derby was delayed for more than a month, thanks to torrential rain in early May.
Montvale Street, near Bradford Elementary School, was blocked to traffic for the duration of the event.
