WEBB CITY, Mo. — Police in Southwest Missouri are investigating the accidental firing of a gun involving a 6-year-old boy and an off-duty police officer in a city park over the weekend.
No one was injured, police said.
Webb City police responded to the accidental discharge of a firearm in the park at approximately 4:30 p.m. Saturday. While at the park with his family, an off-duty Webb City police officer climbed onto playground equipment to help his small child, who became distressed at the top of a slide. At some point, the officer lost his off-duty firearm out of his concealed carry holster.
Before he could reclaim the weapon, a 6-year-old boy had picked up and fired the gun. The bullet struck a slide, according to Webb City Police Chief Carl Francis.
The Webb City Police Department’s Internal Affairs division is investigating this incident and will make a recommendation for disciplinary action.
