The Rev. John Delaney's big day was approaching, and staff members at Sacred Hearts Church were determined not to let the coronavirus crisis get in the way.

The pandemic would shelf any plans for a dinner or other formal gathering to mark the 25th anniversary of Delaney becoming a priest, so the staff devised a safer way to "gather'' and say thanks to their pastor.

It would be by car — hundreds of them passing by the church.

With all the pieces in place, the staff lured Delaney outside the church one day recently for a surprise car parade. He received well-wishes from hundreds of people who waved, honked horns and displayed signs in his honor.
