The Lamplighter noticed that the trunks of some of the 21 trees in White's Park and across the street at Mill Brook Park are sporting green bags called Gatorbags.
Apparently, these bags are intended to "slow water" the young trees and "drought harden" them throughout the summer. The area had been suffering from a moderate drought after seven months of insufficient precipitation.
Mill Brook Park is home to the city's new Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Together for Haverhill
Local civic groups banded together during the COVID-19 crisis to support the community over the past several weeks.
The Lamplighter would like to thank the Exchange Club, Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club of Haverhill and the Pentucket Kiwanis Club, which collectively raised $5,000 to buy 5,000 masks to donate to Haverhill nursing homes, food pantries and non-profits.
Just a joke
If you happen to see a photo on Facebook with Congressman Joe Kennedy III endorsing Tim Slavit for mayor, don't take it seriously.
Slavit said Kennedy was in the area late last month when he called Slavit, a long-time friend of the Kennedy family, to say he wanted to drop by Slavit's Haverhill home and say hello. Slavit said that while visiting, Kennedy jokingly suggested they take a photo with Kennedy endorsing Slavit as mayor.
"It was all done in jest," Slavit said.
Slavit is the city's former harbormaster and son of the late William "Red'' Slavit, who served many years as Haverhill harbormaster.
Congrats to local doc
A local doctor has been honored for his achievements.
Funeral Director Lorenzo Carnevale Sr. recently presented the Italian-American Achievement & Appreciation Award from the Sons of Italy Victor Emanuel Lodge to Dr. Joseph Cardarelli Jr.
Cardarelli, who is well-known in Haverhill, is board certified in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. His office is at 234 Summer St.
