The YWCA Northeastern Massachusetts is seeking women who have made a difference in their work and community.
Nominations will be accepted through March 1. The Tribute to Women luncheon will take place at the Andover Country Club on May 14 from noon to 2 p.m. and serves as the YWCA’s major fundraising event.
Women honored at the event come from a variety of walks of life. Their contributions are varied, and all are remarkable in their own way. Since 1983, the YWCA’s Tribute to Women awards luncheon has recognized more than 1,200 Merrimack Valley and North Shore women leaders from business and community organizations. The event’s honorary chair is former state Sen. Susan Tucker. Diamond Sponsor of the event is Pfizer Inc.

Early voting in Haverhill: Early voting for the presidential primary runs from Monday, Feb. 24, through Friday, Feb. 28, during regular business hours, which are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the basement (former Registry of Motor Vehicles location) of City Hall, 4 Summer St.
The hours have been extended from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, to allow for voting in the evening.
You need to be a registered voter in Haverhill to vote early. The deadline to register to vote for this election is Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. The city clerk’s office will be open only for voter registration that evening. Voters do not have to present a reason to vote early.
Once you have voted, your ballot will be secured in a locked vault and delivered to your regular polling location on election day to be counted.
You can check your voter status online at sec.state.ma.us. If you are an inactive voter, you will need to provide ID/proof of residence at the time of your vote. Pajama collection: The public library has teamed up with the Boston Bruins to participate in the 13th annual Boston Bruins PJ Drive to benefit two nonprofit groups: the Department of Children and Families’ Wonderfund, and Cradles to Crayons.
The drive runs from Feb. 1 through March 15. The library will be collecting new pairs of pajamas for babies, children and teens. Please bring donations to the children’s room at the library.
The drive's goal is to collect 13,000 pairs of new pajamas. Many of the pajamas donated go to local DCF offices in the area in which they were collected, benefiting local children and teens. DCF estimates that at any given time, the agency is working with 45,000 babies, children and teens.
Last year, libraries from across the state collected 13,022 new pairs of pajamas, a new record for the drive. In total, more than 20,000 pairs of pajamas were collected by 251 groups, 136 of which were libraries.

CPR, first-aid classes offered: The Haverhill YMCA is offering CPR, AED and first-aid certification classes.
All classes are held at 6:30 p.m. at the YMCA, 81 Winter St., and are open to ages 10 and older. The cost is $55 per class. First aid classes are Feb. 24, March 11, April 27, May 18 and June 11. CPR and AED classes are Feb. 13, March 23, April 22, May 13 and June 1.

Thursday evening book club: The public library will host a book club group on the last Thursday of each month from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Job networking group: The 50-plus job seekers networking group that addresses the issues of age bias in hiring, workforce re-entry and career redirection enters the new year with a series of new sessions optimized for senior citizens intent on improving their employment status.
The program is aimed directly men and women in the 50-plus demographic who live in the Merrimack Valley or Essex County area. The program meets at the North Andover Senior Center, 120-R Main St., on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 4:30 p.m.
Formed under the direction of the North Andover Senior Center, the program, which began in September 2019, has seen the largest participation to date of any similar program pioneered and sponsored by The Massachusetts Council on Aging.
Upcoming topics include: Jan 28, developing a resume/what are recruiters looking for; and Feb. 11, creating an elevator speech, quick and to-the-point description of yourself.

Scholarship applications available: The Pentucket Kiwanis Club of Haverhill is accepting applications for three available scholarship awards that have been increased in size.
Each award is now $1,000. Eligible applicants are students who attend Haverhill High School, Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School or Pentucket Regional High School. Also eligible are Haverhill residents who attend another school or are home schooled.
The awards will be based on scholastic ability, character, activities and community service, and financial need. Completed applications must be received by April 3. Applications are available online at pentucketkiwanis.org.
Book launch: Join Haverhill author Jolene Grace for the launch of her book, “Going Dark!” Thursday, Jan. 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the public library.
The book is a spy novel inspired by Jolene’s travels and encounter with people from all walks of life, and is her debut novel in the Gabriel Jets series, library officials said.

Fundraising event: Congregation Beth Israel of the Merrimack Valley will hold its major fundraising event, “An Evening of Sweet Indulgence,” Saturday, Feb. 1, from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 123 Old River Road, Andover.
Local television and radio personality Billy Costa will celebrate the best of the Merrimack Valley’s culinary flair. Visitors will sample a variety of appetizers and desserts from local restaurants, caterers and bakeries during this fun-filled Saturday night. Be part of the voting as two prestigious awards will be presented: “Best Dessert in the Merrimack Valley” and “Best Appetizer of the Evening.”
The evening includes music by a disc jockey, live entertainment, raffles and silent and live auctions.
Preschool resource fair: The Haverhill Public Schools Early Learning Leadership Team will hold a preschool resource fair Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Haverhill High School library, 137 Monument St. Snow date is Feb. 8 at the same times.
More than 20 early learning providers, including the Haverhill YMCA, Community Action Head Start, the Moody Preschool, Wildflower Montessori and International Child Care will participate to discuss their programs and offer informational materials.

Kindergarten information sessions: Haverhill Public Schools will hold parent information sessions for incoming kindergarten students Tuesday, Feb. 4, and Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Haverhill High School library, 137 Monument St.
Parents only need to attend one of the sessions, not both.
Children must be 5 years old by Aug. 31 to be eligible for kindergarten in September.

New art exhibit: “Are We There Yet?” is the first show of the new decade to be presented in the Northern Essex Community College Linda Hummel-Shea ArtSpace and was created by Dianne Pappas, a Northern Essex adjunct art and design faculty member.
The exhibit runs through Feb. 28. An opening reception and artist talk is Thursday, Feb. 6, from 3 to 6 p.m.
The artspace is located in the Harold Bentley Library on the college’s Haverhill campus, 100 Elliott St. The show is free to attend and is open to the public during library hours – Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Pappas, a visual artist and educator who lives in Sudbury, has worked in the Linda Hummel-Shea Gallery since the beginning of January creating this unique installation within the space. She uses the signature materials of much of her previous works, including plaster, cement, corrugated metal, plastic and twine, among other materials.

NECC also offers certificates in community health worker, dental assisting, health care technician, medical assistant, medical billing, medical coding, medical office assistant, paramedic technology, practical nursing and sleep technologist.

Conversation Cafe coming to Haverhill: The public library will host Conversation Cafe events Feb. 19, March 25, April 22 and May 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
The Feb. 19 topic of discussion will be: “We Need to Talk: Crossing the Political Divide.” Participants will meet in the library auditorium.
Conversation Cafes, which are free and open to the public, offer a structured format which allows time for everyone to speak. Although the group’s organizers are interested in the process of discussing potentially polarizing topics, their underlying objective is to encourage intentional listening as a way to increase understanding and compassion and help capitalize on what people have in common rather than what divides them.
