As the American people celebrated the 4th of July this week and the United States turned 235 years young, we gathered as a nation and reflected on years past. We remembered those who have given up so much for the country we love to move us forward. Thomas Jefferson wrote, "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal ... "

The founders state in the preamble that we must work together to form a more perfect union by establishing justice, keeping the peace and providing defense for our people. They also said, above all else, that we secure the blessings of liberty.

This is why I am a Democrat.

The Democratic Party is the party of togetherness. We recognize that our efforts, similar to the efforts of the founders, are only successful if we work together. Granted, we are a nation of many people and many ideas, but if we want to make this country better, we need to do what is best for the people.

We are the party that stands up to fight for equality and accept all walks of life, all differences in race, religion, nationality, gender and sexual orientation. We are also a party that never backs down from a fight. The fight is always going to be hard, and it may take years, but we will never back down. The recent landmark decision to allow marriage equality in New York proves just that.

Similar to Thomas Jefferson's famous words, we have certain rights that cannot be encroached on. There are several truths that are self-evident. Or as the Bible states in Matthew 7:12, "As you wish that others would do to you, do also to them ... " The Democratic Party is the party that established the rule that health care is to be enjoyed by all, regardless of economic status, because in order to live our life to the fullest, we must be healthy. We also have established that all Americans are to enjoy the ability to breathe clean air and drink clean water.

Furthermore, the Democratic Party understands that government has a necessary role to help its people. The government must protect itself and others when it is threatened by enemies foreign and domestic, and from time to time will help those who are being oppressed by its leader.

We also state that as a community we have a right to make sure our elderly, soldiers, veterans and the poor need to be taken care of. This is why the Democratic Party established and protects Medicare and Social Security. We also go to great lengths to ensure those who serve in our armed forces can come home and be able to live a productive life — the G.I. Bill is another testament to the party's core beliefs.

The blessings of liberty also need to be secured and protected. The Democratic Party understands the founders fled and fought against the nation of England to protect freedom and justice that was not enjoyed by everyone before. Freedom of religion, speech, expression and press may not be infringed. By this, we also know this also includes the freedom of information and the right to privacy.

It is the Democratic Party that stands up for the people. We know the Constitution, although sacred, must be able to evolve because this is what the founders had desired. This 4th of July, we stood in our backyards with our friends and family and watched the fireworks explode in the night sky. And now, I ask all Americans to remember the phrase "E Pluribus Unum."

That out of many differences of opinion, many different races, many different backgrounds, we are all equal and we are all one.

This is why I am a Democrat.
